More info on the "Rainbow bottom anemone"

I managed to get a hold of one of these elusive creatures recently (For an amazing deal) and after doing some brief research, I have found out that the scientific name of this creature is Anthopleura fuscoviridis and have found out that they are a common sub-tropical species from Japan.

Are there any other keepers of this anemone that would like to share their experiences with it? As there is currently very little information on it.
 
I’ve seen them online. Never ordered one cause I know nothing about them (yet). Can you post some pictures of yours?

I just read a reefbuilders article from 1 month ago that stated they are so new there isn't even a consensus on whether or not its photosynthetic. It seems you will be a bit of a pioneer here.
 
I think they prefer water under 76 farenheit. Dont know how happy they will be in a reef tank a local lfs here has like 30 of them
 
Some people said these anemone can’t keep long because the temperature. But I am not sure.
 
Had a chance to buy awhile back. Didn’t. Haven’t heard about anyone keeping these yet either.

Interestingly, we were able to obtain one for a great price from our lfs when they first came out. I placed it in an isolated corner of my tank on a nice piece of life rock. The next day i found it had moved under the rock. I let it stay for a couple weeks and then decided I would try to relocate it. Surprise, it was gone. I looked everywhere in the crevices of the rock and found nothing. Time has passed and I moved on. Lol

Tonight, over three months later I decided to move that rock as I have various cyphastrea growing well on it and wanted to place it in a better location. I did a double take, and square under that rock is our rainbow bottom anemone in all its glory. It’s anchored itself down in the sand and attached to the bottom glass.

I’ve seen more questions than answers about these guys. My thoughts
-I highly doubt these are photosynthetic
-my tank runs 78-high 79s all summer, so I believe it can tolerate warmer water quite well.

I’m hoping it will stay put now that I moved the rock. I didn’t want to place the rock back in fear of causing damage. It’s still in a very shaded part of my tank.

I would be interested in hearing about survival rates, and any other successes people are having.

The rainbow bottom nems are more formally known as Anthopleura fuscoviridis, a species native to lagoonal areas around Japan and possibly southwards. They are likely non-photosynthetic (IMO based on traits of other species in its genus). Species like Anthopleura xanthogrammica, A. elegantissima, and A. sola (coldwater endemics to the Pacific coast of North America) are all photosynthetic having an abundance of zoochlorellae and zooxanthellae in their tentacles, giving them a brown or green color depending on the species of symbiotic algae living within them. A. fuscoviridis does not have any of these present (hence the white translucent tentacles). I believe that over time they will grow accustomed to our tanks (acclimatization permitted). I've noticed a lot of individuals shedding mucus coats which is a general stress response for anemones which may be due to a variety of factors like high light, warm temps, etc. However I think if acclimated to reef temps over time and fed adequately they should be fine
