I have read through a lot of threads about being pro active regarding new fish. First I admit I have never quarantined but I have used the TTM method with success. Many years ago I lost fish to Ich but not lately, however I did lose some to flukes not even knowing much about them. I do now.

Does QT trump TTM primarily because of velvet and urinoma?

What is better Copper-safe or CP, assuming I can even get a script for the latter.

Does the copper treatment stay in the QT tank for ever? I hate ruin a perfectly good small DT aio (20 g). I think it might be a little tight but I considered getting a 10g and use that for the chemical treatment and use the 20g for further observation.

Aside from purchasing the chemicals and a copper test kit. The QT method in some ways is easier than TTM.

Unfortunately I have (and want) a pretty small fish load so with only 3 fish in a 100g tank and only thinking about 3 more it is a pain to do anything pro actively. I am more interested in corals but fish are nice for movement. Plus most non reefers only think of fish I have had to explain too many times that corals are animals and not a plastic ornament:)

Even though I have a LFS that claims to QT for 2 weeks I don't believe it. I once went in there on the day new fish were delivered and a guy who lost everything during a hurricane bought everything he could right out of the tanks as fast as the employee could catch them. So much for that BS.

I'm sure I will have more questions but this is a start.

TTM is a form of QT especially useful for ICH.
Copper will be absorbed by sand rocks and possibly silicone and acrylic in small amounts. It can be removed with copper zorb. The larger tank is likely going to be more stable and would be my choice.

^^ this is an outstanding QT protocol that has increased my success stories even with sensitive fish like wrasse. Hanna Checker makes keeping copper at 1.75 a breeze.

Following. I also am new to QT, but not reefing. I just haven't added anything to my tank in ages and I got a new one that I want to get a few fish and make sure they are disease free.

Tank transfer in my experience is superior to a standard quarantine, with a twist.

Ttm, or a new sterile tank , changed every 72 hours or less. However, this water is already mixed with copper power to a set 2.25 level.

Also dosed in I days 1,3,7,9 is general cure.

The ttm/copper should provide a solution and insurance policy to ich, while the copper in itself tackles velvet.

The general cure will take care of uro, brook , flukes.

The ttm also has the added bonus of not allowing ammonia to build up, and allows you to start fresh with the metro, so it is not building up.

I’ve lost more fish in a standard running qt, from perceived ammonia than anything else. Even using beneficial bacterial and water changes did not help, and I do not trust Seachem badges .

14 days of this and done, if the time tables on parasite is correct, than 14 days is plenty sufficient .
