More Sump noise drama - Modular Marine overflow

Hi there,

I’m dealing with noise issues with my sump setup and the noise. My main issue is the noise of the pipes in the first chamber

I dropped a pipe 2/3 down. It help with the nose a little bit it is still too loud. Is there anything else I can do?

The other issue is he overflow makes a toilet gurgle noise on the primary. I took out all the box piping in the secondary to have it drain at the very bottom. This helped a little as well.

The main issue is the MM overflow does not give you space to have two U shaped drains

What type of overflow system are you running? My guess is you don't have a full siphon so you are getting that noise. If you are running a bean animal or herbie style overflow are you using a gate valve on the main drain?

I’m just following what other builders did. MM doesn’t have openings to put the airline. How big should the hole be?

I am not an expert on this but in my opinion, the 'main' drain that you have at the bottom of the box needs a gate valve so it is always at siphon.
U shaped pipe needs an air hole and should be running just a bit more than a trickle of water.
third pipe is fine, it is an emergency pipe

In the diagram above you will notice the Bean Animal Drain uses three drain lines which means you need three holes in your tank or overflow box. The main siphon drain is a Herbie style pipe, the secondary vented standpipe is a Durso drain and the third is the emergency back-up drain.

Both the primary and secondary have gate valves. When I tried to adjust the box just filled up to the second pipe and quickly drained back down to where the primary is.

Exactly, you made 2 siphons. If you slowed the first the second with the U would start and flush the box like a toilet. Then it would repeat. No matter how you adjusted the valves it would always do this. You would only change how fast it happens.

Drill a 1/8 the inch hole in the top of the U or a bigger one and stick a short piece of airline in it so it is always above the water.

Do I need to glue the airline hose in or just stick it in the tube?

You should use the center bulkhead as your stand pipe/emergency; then you can fit two U-tubes. I find it useful to drill a small hole in the top radius of the U tube to prevent siphon startup problems. Mine's a much larger model, but you can see in the picture. You want to have the primary slightly lower in the box than the secondary so the latter only engages if there is a problem with the former. You must have a gate/ball valve on the primary to adjust to a full siphon for it to be quiet.
