Most reef safe angels?

Im scared of all of them. Maybe this thread will give me some insight.

I just bought myself a Multicolor Angelfish (Centropyge multicolor) going to take the risk with it in my reef, they are just too beautiful not to try. Picking it up in a few days after its done with QT.

I have a Flame Angel that's never bothered anything. I really think the key is to have mature live rocks and plenty of bugs to keep them occupied and feed them well. I have clams, SPS, Euphyllia, Gorgonians, zoas, so on, etc. Angles are very active fish.

I had very good luck with a juvenile emporer in my SPS/LPS tank. When he out grew my tank, he went to my brother's tank and has left SPS/LPS alone. He did chomp on some of his zoas though. He now has his mature colors.

I had good luck with a coral beauty and ebli angel.my flame recently startled nipping my acros so I got rid of him

I had a flame. Never touched my coral but fir some reason hated bottom dwelling fish... Killed my ember blenny and bluespot jaw... Flame is gone now!

My coral beauty took a liking to all my coral after three years, feed twice a day and nori every three days too

If you lived near me I would recommend trying to grab the flame angel out of the frag tank at my LFS, Ive watched him a bit and he hasnt picked at anything. But what I heard it would still be hit or miss I have no experience with them so IDK but I personally am not willing to risk it unless I have enough coral/large enough tank where if it did pick it would be spread amongst many colonies.. I was debating picking him up but my clowns are doing a good job at killing coral by deciding they want to live in it lol. But, I would think the most reef safe based on what I have seen with peoples experiences is Flame angel but I have no experience of my own ;) I think it really just boils down to what you are willing to risk, or possibly trade off not so well corals for a fish or everything going well.

Other than Genicanthus there's no such thing as a reef safe angel. Some examples of certain species may be safe, but IME they all pick eventually. You'll notice that a lot of people with Centropyge angels that don't pick haven't had them very long. I've been in the hobby for nearly 30 years and every Centropyge Angel I've ever owned eventually nipped corals. In some cases it took years before they did so, but if I had them for more than a couple years they eventually picked.

Are referring to nipping polyps? Would that explain little to no polyp extension ?

Yep, my experience is that some angels will rarely nip but will do so often enough to keep SPS from extending their polyps during the day.

I had a Coral Beauty that was great for 1 year, then....BAM...Was a polyp eating machine and bossy. He was one of my first fish, so that may have had something to do with the bossiness. Gave him away to a fellow reefer and he has been a model citizen so far...maybe because he was the last fish added? I now have a pair of Swallow Tail Angels (Genicanthus) and they are perfect for the reef.

Had a potters angel for a couple years. He didn't pick anything. Had him from when he was tiny. Just disappeared one day. Bummers. Just picked up a small bandit angel. He's about 2" still. Hopefully he will be a model citizen. So far so good.
