Hey all, I'm moving from Tampa FL to the Portland area in Oregon and was curious about how I would move a 40gal that far? Any tips or tricks?
Why not get a large inverter to run the heaters. Big enough one and it will run a power head as well. I have a 1000 watt one I use if the power goes out came from harbor freight works great. I run my return a power head and a 300 watt heaterThat's a long drive! Guessing you'll be about 3 days driving? I too will be moving a 40 gallon setup next year and am already dreading it. All I have so far is using these battery powered pumps:

Heating I haven't figured out yet, so I'll be following along.
What about the breakdown? Are you saying to leave it all as is?Why not get a large inverter to run the heaters. Big enough one and it will run a power head as well. NOOO break it down and put the live stock in moving friendly containers put a heater and a power head in there. Brute and rubber maids are your friends. I moved a 90 gallon from California to wa state that way. Lost 2 acros but the rest and fish where fine. As long as you are not leaving the inverter running for long periods with the engine not running your fine. When i stayed at the hotel i was lucky they had an outdoor plug i used to power the setup when I was not driving. What about the breakdown? Are you saying to leave it all as is?
I have a sailfin tang, 3 chrome, and 1 wrasse. For corals, zoas, Kenya tree, cinnamon polyp, and maybee like 2 others. I also have a few snails and crabs and a conch snail. How large are your pieces/fish? I moved with car invertor, heaters, air pump and air stones in multiple 5 gallon buckets with lids and air holes. Allows you to easily move the buckets into a hotel room if need be so you can plug in heaters and air pump.
Yeah he's a baby, thanks so much!Depending on the size of that sailfin (though I hope it's small, as it will need larger than a 40g very soon), you should be able to transport everything in 3-4 buckets. Leave a couple inches of air space at the top.
