This is what I'm looking at right now:

Google diy vent covers. Get that vent covered with a filter or stack
Of filters. Not just to
Keep dust out of the tank but dust out of your lungs. They are super easy to make. You can pick up filters just about any where.

Even just picking up a $8-10 filter made for an Forced air heater would work, tape it around the sides. Change out once a month.

thar sump is pretty pricey. I've always had the idea of having a small 30-40 gallon cube display, with a lower cabinet next to stand to house a 55gallon sump with fuge, would probably be able to have enough flow from the return to not even worry about power heads. And every thing could be kept hidden in the sump.

It's a long story but,

The air duct in my apartment building is less than optimal. On occasion, once every month of so, the vent in my bedroom (the room in which my tank is located) will spout ungodly amounts of dust which can sometimes blanket everything in my room, sometimes up to a half inch of dust. The landlord refuses to fix it and I'm not paying enough for rent to be able to complain too loudly. In addition, the AC is nonexistant and so there are three fans running in the room constantly.

I've dealt with some shady landlords, but nothing ever as bad as that. If the AC is nonexistent, can you just close the vent? How hot does it get there? No AC + covered tank can mean too high temps in your aquarium. :(

Unfortunately the slide that closes the vent is broken and I've been told that I'll be fined and prosecuted if I "tamper" with it. Just a bad situation, but you get what you pay for.

Link doesn't work.

I don't think taping a filter over the vent would be tampering, it would definitely cut down the dust issue.

I agree with the other suggestions. There are definitely non-permanent ways to filter or divert the air. Instead of tape, you could have a thin filter sheet attached to the vent with magnets. If everyone's sticking to the rules, your landlord needs to tell you before he comes into your apartment, so you could just easily pull it off and cover your tank with a towel or something til he leaves.

Thank you haha. But I've made peace with the issue. I'm much more concerned with what lighting system to get.
