Ok I have my clam in a 38 gallon and put him on a flat rock. I noticed there are 2 string looking things attached to the rock. I'm wanting to move him to the new tank. What should I do?

Those are the basal threads that hold the clam in place, can you move the flat rock over? How securely bound to the rock is the clam, are there a lot of basal threads?

Cut the threads as close to the rock as you can with a sharp razor blade.

No it does not hurt the clam, ripping the clam off the rock can tear the foot and damage the clam. This is the reason you slowly cut the threads as close to the point of attachment (the rock) as possible. What type of clam is this and how large?

It's not uncommon for large Squamosa to not attach to a substrate when placed in the sand bed, it's not an issue. Just go slow when you detach it.
