So in about a month I am moving and have never had to move a saltwater aquarium, so needless to say I'm lost. I have 75g (glass) reef tank. Live stock isn't too much. 5 fish, a rbta, a few other corals here and there all still on plugs. Not hard to move. My free when moving is the water and sand. I live in a upper unit apartment and I am moving to another upper unit. My luck right? The tank was already heavy enough empty, I don't even want to know with wet sand. So my question is, what have you had success with when moving? I was think a brute trash can, but I didn't know if there was an easier way. Thanks ahead of time!

From what I have read on here. You probably want to take all the sand out and just use new sand.....as for rocks just use the trash cans.

How long have you had the tank setup? Maybe just ditch the sand and start over with new sand?

Otherwise, some smaller containers for the water and for the sand (so that you don't have one container that weighs a ton)...then you should be good to go.

Make sure you have some extra saltwater mixed up in advance as well...just in case.

I agree completely ^

I moved my buddy's 125gallon with rock, sand and sump in 8 hours from start to finish.

I took all the rock out and put it in various 5 gallon buckets with a little water just to stay moist in the container. I put the sand in another couple 5 gallon buckets. Fish went into a 5 gallon bucket with a piece of rock and some nutrifin to destress them during the move. The water went into 12 - 5 gallon water jugs. All the filtration went into a tub from walmart to keep it from dripping into my SUV.
When we got to the destination, I put the sand back, poured what water I had brought into the tank, put the fish back, and started a canister filter as I hooked up the rest of the system and put the rock back into the tank. Everyone made it, no ICH and no deaths.

If the sandbed is shallow then reusing it shouldn't be any problems. If its over 2" consistently it could be a little risky and it would probably be best to replace it. This would be a good time to clean your live rock by scrubbing it and blasting it with turkey baster. Personally I would also do a large water change at this time, something like 25 gallons. Good luck!

When disposing of the sand, wouldn't you lose all your detritivore critters in the sand bed? Would that be a concern? Or would some be enough on the rocks?

More than likely you have enough on your rock. Keep an eye out for nutrients for the first month or 2. You also may want to increase water change frequency just to be on the safe side.
