Hey guys, I'm going to be making the move from Central Illinois to the West Coast mid Jan. Hoping to get some advice about purchasing a new set-up while I'm out there. Hoping a few of you guys living out there could point me in the right direction. Also wondering about your thoughts on shipping some of my nicer pieces out there once everything is set-up or is it worth it to just sell and buy back later?

Thanks in advance,

Rich

Here's an early wlcome to you.

You will love the Bay Area. Here are a list of lfs that have great selection of corals:

Might wanna check this post out.

I like:

Aquatic Central - San Francisco
Aquatic Collection - Hayward
Neptune Aquatics - Milpitas

wowee. chicago native here. been on the west coast for about a decade now. champaign, huh? UofI? my lil sister is in school down there.

where in california you heading? As for shipping, do what the pros do. styro box, bags, containers, and next day air. I know there are some pieces that i just dont want to let go or try to replace.

Haha, hit the nail on the head there. Didn't go to school at UofI thought. Just working in the area. I have a few really nice chalices that I'd rather not sell (big chunk of Rainbow Crush being one of them :) )

The exact location is still to be determined since I'll also be setting up a lab for my Start-up at the same time. I'm thinking the middle of San Francisco for the lab so the apt would probably be close.

Welcome to the bay! I say sell what you think you can already collect again, but keep those pieces that you feel are more personal and that you're personally attached to or things you don't think you'll find again for a long time.

LAB??! im intrigued, what kinda lab? doing what>

I'm in the Fermentation Field. For the last three years I was working with a company to turn sugar feedstocks (Corn, Sugar Cane Juice, Dextrose) into butanol and acetone for use in the chemical industry. Similar to the ethanol business but a lot more cost effective. This new start-up is more focused on the fermentation processes involved in the natural gas sector (syngas primarily). Should be a pretty interesting gig and the cool part is that I get to do all of the set-up and experimentation.

if you have a few pieces u just done want to see go, you can always ship a few to me. i'll host them untill u get on ur feet. im sure i can find room in the frag tank. let me know bud im more than willing to assist. oh btw i have a few close friends who own LFS out here so i can help there too.

I went to school at U of I and lived in Champaign for 4 years...wow what a culture shock its going to be, but def an awesome decision to move to the bay area!

Lemme know if I can help in some way, Richie! I agree that it would be optimal to have a reefer hold your pieces in SF if possible until you are setup.

GL on the move! And cool job!

Thanks bro, i knew you had lived in Chicago, but didn't know you went to UofI. Haha, I'm looking forward to some "culture" shock. Been getting a little bored with the midwest lately. I'll hit you up here in a few days about possibly shipping you some goodies to hold on to.
