I most likely will be moving from SW Missouri to Cedar Rapids IA within the next 4 months. This is an 8-10 hour drive ( with stops).
Want to plan out the safest way to transport my 20g AIO
Reef and livestock.
My Plan thus far:
Most of my coral is glued to rock. Going to strategically place rock in 3.5 gallon bucket so they will not move, cover with tank water. And use bubbler. 2 clownfish and watchman goby in separate bucket with bubbler. Leave live sand and water just covering it in tank and packing it in its original shipping container. All will ride in car cabin to maintain temperature as best as possible. I will be transporting all the water from the tank as well.
Arrival setup: fill tank with everything plug in and let heater bring to temp, 78° gradually. Hope everything will arrive okay.
Any other ideas are welcomed.
Livestock:
Zoas, Palys, duncans, pipe organ, candy canes, branching frogspawn, a black pink tip torch, plating monti, bubble gum digi, cclovees and mushrooms.

Get new sand and use new water… I’d empty the tank and just keep your rocks and live stock wet and set it up as a brand new tank with brand new sand! You won’t have any loses and the tank will thrive!

There's no need to save the tank water besides what you're using for transport.

How much sand in the 20 gallon?

I tried to move a 20 long sump that had middle section with a 4 inch bed, maybe the equivalent of half a bucket of sand.

It was heavy and I was a lot younger. I couldn't do it now.

The problem lies in all the crud that will get stirred up and cause problems like an ammonia spike.. it’s cheaper and healthier to use new sand. But yeah it’s heavy also lol

Going to do my Water Change Water the day before and bring it with probably 75%(15gal).
I'll clean my sand bed good with the WC I do the week before. I have about 30 cerith snails in the sand bed, they do an awesome job of keeping it clean.
Thanks for the new Water idea, I'm going to mull over the sand Change.

30 snails input a ton of pellet waste into the bed, they'll age it beyond norm vs clean it for sure you should use new sand, pick the snails out and transport them outside the new sand and input them once relocated.
