So I recently setup my new 125 and wanted to do SPS, it is still in the planning phase but given we are moving in 5 - 7 years when we buy a larger home I was wondering if it was feasible to still do so? Would the SPS survive the move? The only time I have moved a reef I literally sold everything out of it and just moved the tank itself and this time I would prefer to move stuff and keep what I have worked on. I could always hire a local aquarium maintenance company but if its not too difficult I was considering doing it on my own given they would charge around $1200 or more for a simple across town move and setup.

With some good planning I think it is doable. You can transport your rocks and corals in seperate containers with some tank water. Make sure you have the required saltwater ready in your home the day of the move.
You could even add a powerheqd, heater and put a light (if using ledstrips) over the container till the tank is ready.

There is always a chance you will lose a coral due to the move, but it will be cheaper and easier than buying new frags and start all over.

If u can pack your corals in plastic bag just like shipping. Rock can be in bin with just limited water to keep wet. Try to save as much clean water from your tank thats way when u get to your new place your tank will not need to cycle again

I moved a 270g tank with mostly sps from northern california to southern california, though I didn't have 5 - 7 years of growth. From the time I started taking livestock out to when I got everything in temporary holding tanks (stock tanks with lights, heaters and powerheads) at my destination, it was about 24 hours. I didn't use heaters and only battery powered air pumps for the fish. Water temp was pretty cool by the time I arrived but had no losses. It is a lot of work and takes planning but it is doable.

Sounds good, I was worried given their tendency to encrust and attach, but if I pack them well like you all are saying I guess if one breaks it would be no different than fragging in a way?

I've moved 5 times with SPS and the made the trip every time.

A well done coral tank should grow out a fill a tank in three years so looks like you will have to grow the tank, frag the corals back to frags, regrow the tank, then you can frag them all back and move just frags in 6 years. I do agree, I rarely think one year down the road let alone 6...
