I purchased a QT'd and conditioned Moyeri Wrasse back on Nov 20th. I used an acclimation box with a container of sand in it but she seemed stressed out so I let her out. She dove in the sand and then I saw her out on day 2 via a camera I have on the tank. In the time I was able to watch that day I didn't see anybody hassling her. But I never saw her after that time. For the first few weeks I didn't do my weekly sand vacuuming so as to not disturb her. After about 3 weeks with no sightings I started maintaining the sand again. This morning as I got ready to leave for work she is out. But she looks super skinny (nearly 2 months of hiding will do that I suppose) and she's swimming poorly.

My questions are.

  • Do I leave her in the main reef where she's been? There's a lot of flow and there's more fish so more competition for food.
  • Do I move her to a bare bottom frag tank I've been setting up. It has pods, but only one other fish currently
  • Do I move her to what had been my coral/invert QT tank. There are currently a couple fish in there that didn't go through QT so they are being held until I can free up a tank. There is sand and there is pods but fish weren't treated yet.
  • Is she even going to make it or did she come out to die?
She did seem to be going after food when I fed the tank but she's swimming pretty poorly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

@evolved what would you do?

I would pull it and put it in a tank Alone and try to fatten it up but maybe that would just further stress it

Thanks. I also posted in the emergency forum: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/moyeri-wrasse-help.678163/ and put a couple updates there.

As of today/tonight she's still in the bare bottom tank with a couple containers of sand. She seems to have found one of the containers and slept in it the last 2 nights. She's out and about during the day (still no lights turned on on the tank yet but the room gets some light) and when I've fed the tank I have seen her eat both frozen and some white worms.

So I guess as of now all is well. I'll keep hoping to fatten her back up and my goal would be to get her back into the reef but we'll see. She could stay in this tank if need be but I was hoping she'd be part of the main tank, not a frag tank.

It sounds to me like there's a bully in the DT that forced it into the sand for the extended period.

I'm sure that is possible even if I didn't witness any bullying. I have a few tangs and a Melanarus and Coris wrasse in the tank but overall it's generally peaceful. Occasional short chase but nothing chronic. I guess for now it stays in the frag tank and we see how it goes in there.
