mp-40... what settings does everyone use on a SPS tank?

Ordered a MP40 through my LFS the other day and it came in today..... Not really impressed with it tho, my modded maxi-jet out hustles it for sure and cost me about $430 less! My yellow tang dropped a large log about 6" from the MJ, the MJ picked it up sucked it in spit it all the way down to the mp40 (in a 48"tank) and the mp40 proceeded to burp it out about 6-8" max!

I fed the tank with all pumps running, and the mp40 moves NLS pellets about 20", the MJ again will push them the full distance of the tank.

I have the vortech in reef crest mode peaking at 90%, and the best I have seen anything move from it is about 20-22". What mode is everyone using these things in on a full sps tank?? Especially a 48" tank.

I have Two Mp 40's in my 120g. 48x24x24. They may not push as hard as you modded pump, but for me its all about how they link together and all the modes. I switch between 5 of them in 24hr. At 6:30am they run Tidal Swell, then at 11:30am i switch it to Reef Crest, at 3:30pm I feed and then run Nutrient Transport till 6pm. From 6 to 10:30 they run Lagoonal mode and then they go to sleep and run at %50.

How do you switch the modes (or did you spend even more and buy the module for your controller) throughout the day? Even the ability to switch them like that isn't that big of a gain for me over my cheap MJ's, which I run on a random timer throughout the day with my RA controller.

I bought this thing because everyone raves how awesome they are and how much water they move but I'm not seein it. I would put it in short pulse but I've read that burns them up quicker.

I run two mp40 on reef crest or nutrient export (purple) you can control them with an Apex and wireless module

What size tank are you running them on?

I think I would really need 2xmp40 and 2xmp10 in my little tank (52g of actual water in a 48x18x18) to get the flow I like, and I have a pretty open scape. Quite honestly I am hoping there is something wrong with my pump and its really not this bad.

The mp40 sits about where the yellow tang is in this pic.... shouldn't be that hard to move water in this tank:

I bought the MP40 .. 2 of them for my 120 gallon tank. I wish I knew how to switch them around in settings like andr3w says. I don't have an Apex and not sure I'd know how to run one LOL

Astounding if you have discovered the ability to program time adjusting modes! That kind of superior knowledge is even unknown to ecotech without manually programming!!!

Please educate us on how you performed this feat!!!

As far as I know you can only go into night/sleep/feed mode. But not switch from wave to wave.

hours, nutrient export 2 hours, night mode 8 hours

Wow that's a lot of flow. With a tank that dimension 2 40's should be more than enough. At 100% it should be a dust storm in the tank. are you rjnning the 40's on the sides and the 10 in the back facing the front of the tank? I had to 10's on a 50 gallon cube and they moved alot of water @ 50%. My tank is 225 72x30x24 but I also have a reeflow hammerhead return through 4 seaswirls.
Btw I love your scape it's clean and flows well.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I have 1 mp40, but with the flow that I am getting from it I think I would really need 2xmp40's and 2x mp10s to get the flow I'd like to see using just ecotech pumps. I was hoping to be able to replace atleast a couple of my other pumps but I don't think that will happen..... So I will be running the mp40, 2 modded Maxi-Jets, and a koralia 1400..... 2400-8200 gph depending on % of the vortech, and if the MJ's are on/off.

I currently have three MP40s (2 on one end, 1 on the other) and two MP10s (on the back of the tank) They are all run in ReefCrest mode at 100%. The MP10s are synced, as are the two MP40s on one wall, with the other one in anti-sync.

I have 2 old school MP40's on my 120g sps tank, I run them at 100% on pulse mode. If I had any more flow I'd have to go bare bottom.

Correct. I used to run 2 of each, but as the tank grew in, I was getting dead spots. I originally planned on going for an MP60 to replace one of the 40s, but after reading about the noise I opted for another MP40 (not to mention the $400 in gift certificates I had from Christmas for Marine Depot that almost covered it).
