My new to me 54 gallon corner tank came with an MP10. I have had it running for a few days during the cycle. It has worked great. Today it started to make a vibration noise. I assumed it was bumped a little off alignment when doing some work on the sump and my 4 y/o was helping. I tried for 20 minutes to get it to align again but it kept falling off. I am wondering it this is a sign the glass is to thick and I should try a different powerhead. I really like the MP10 and think an MP40 would be overkill. Thoughts or experiences with similar situation. I am going to mess with it again but wanted to throw it out here.

Can you measure the thickness of your glass?

That's the manual for the pump. It looks like if your glass is thicker than 3/8" you might have a problem but I would guess it's not the thickness of the glass since it sounds like the pump has been on there for awhile?

Are you using the rubber spacer (and did the previous owner)?

Agree with both posts. I have two MP10s running on 1/2” glass. They barely stay on but they stay. The wet side needs to be right on top of the pump or it’ll vibrate off I also rotate the wet side once the flow is going, this seems to reduce the vibrations sort of like a sweet spot.

Thanks for your help. I had it going with a slight vibration and it popped off again when I turned it. I will keep messing with it. I am not using the rubber spacer. I guess it wants to test my patience, as with the rest of reef keeping.

Good luck! The manual also says that if you use the pump without the spacer on glass that is 3/16" or thinner, it will damage the pump.

If the glass is 1/4" or 3/8" thick, you don't need the spacer to run everything safely.

I have the same size corner tank. Dont use the rubber spacer, make sure your glass is clean, and like said earlier make sure the pump is off when you align it...cord facing down so it doesn't drag the pump off

How do you have your power heads set up? I have a dual pipe coming off the return tube parallel to the glass with a slight kick back to the center of the tank. A MP10 on one side and the other side is open real estate now. My buddy is giving me a few korelias that he has laying around. The other powerhead I got with the tank is not functional.

I also did get it up and running without a spacer again. Just took a while. Then it was making a vibrating sound, I took it apart and cleaned it again. It was silent last night and now vibrating again. I am going to relook at it after work.

I run my MP10 in the back left corner half way down the tank and at 75% using Mobius (reef setting during the day and Lagoon at night). I have a smaller powerhead in the front left corner just pointing up to move the water. I did however just order another MP10 last night and plan to place it front left equal to the MP10 right now and will get rid of the small powerhead. My idea is that when working after a master/slave setting my water will have great flow all around.

DISCLAIMER: My first saltwater tank ever is only 6 months matured.
