Hey folks, what are your opinions on using the foam covers for these pumps? Benefits, pros/cons?

I'm assuming they're a safety feature for nems, but what if there aren't any in the tank? Do other tank inhabitants like to flirt with disaster? :D

I had them on for a couple seconds, then after feeding I saw that they clog up way to quickly as they were pulling in the food.

I have Trochus snails that climb all over them all the time, but the part that the foam covers doesn't cover the part that they can get into, and that's the front.

I have mixed feelings with them. Like @Billldg said, they clog up quickly when feeding unless you completely shut off the pumps. On the otherhand, my Kole Tang has gotten stuck in between the slit of my MP40 twice when it was smaller going after food (pump at 10%) and got out once I shut off the pump. This made me use them for a few months until it was larger.

Long story short, might be good to use with smaller fish if they seem to get close to it.

I was actually looking at the 3D printed covers that BRS sells for the MP series, still might go that route as the trochus snail problem I have had actually cost be one pump, not a MP pump, but it still got stuck in one thus ruining the pump propeller.

they clog every day. You'd have to buy extras or go with one of those new 3D printed covers. Melevsreef and other vendors have these. They seem to be the solution if you're worried about smaller fish and inverts getting pulled into the inward vortex pull from the mp40.

I tried them years ago and quickly discarded .... as others have noted they clog quickly and dramatically attenuate flow.
