I have a standard 75 mixed reef with an MP40QD on one end and am wanting more flow before I get better lights to start growing some across.

The mp40 is pretty good, I have it at around 60% on reef crest ... any higher and sand starts migrating, but the flow on the opposite side of the tank is lacking. I've been seeing a lot of good stuff about the gyre and was wondering if anyone had one working in conjunction with a vortech.

Seeing as I already have an mp40, would getting another wireless one be more beneficial to anti sync with my current time one, or should I look into getting a gyre?

Thanks!

I have this debate on a 90 gallon. I have an mp10 and a jebao r-4 and I have acros like crazy. And I'm working on getting a new pump. What I've heard between the gyre and vortech is just matter of opinion. Some differences are gyre are recently new and still need major tweeks but they will get the dead spots in your tank but also takes up a bigger footprint where vortech is really strong. You don't have a wire in the tank and it'll work with your other pump. I'd go with vortech so you can put them in sync.

I am running 2 gyre 130's and 1 MP40 in my 72 bow front. The Mp40 is 2/3 the way down in the middle of the tank. The gyre's are at either end of the tank and I run the gyre's at 50% and the mp40 at 30%. I get a mix of different flows and great movement of water.

If there is any chance you may upgrade tanks in the future, go with the gyre. If nothing else, you'll get the benefits of both the gyre and the MP40. The gyre is a MIGHTY powerful piece of equipment and is more than plenty as a stand alone source of flow in my tank. I have my Maspect Gyre XF150 set up several inches from the surface and it flows lengthwise across the tank creating lots of surface tension which is great for gas exchange. I only supplement with the MP40 because of a lower flow area due to how I have rockscaped my reef. The MP40 is set up centrally width-wise to create more random flow through a valley of live rocks.

I have the the gyre 150 and 2 mp40's. The gyre moves WAY more water than the mp40s... so much that I bought another one for the other end of my tank and the mp40's are just extra flow behind my rocks...

I have an 8ft tank and the 150 pushes water all the way across with no problem! The mp40's weren't even close. You can probably get away with the gyre 130

Having a combination of different pumps can be beneficial. The MP40 has wide, gentle flow. Problem is the flow is straight, so corals on the way get bombarded with the stream and sometimes the oposite side of the tank gets poor movement...

The gyre sits high on the water level. It travels in laminar flow agitating the surface and turning at the other side if the tank where you want the flow to go. Both allow for better flow so why now?

same situation on my 300dd
I think we're just going to have to play around and see what works best for us.

Cool, looks a gyre 130 is gonna be going on the opposite side of the tank. That should save me a few bucks and give me some much needed flow on the other side of the tank. Thanks for all the help!

2x gyre 250s and 2x mp40s on back= Awesome flow.
