Hi, I have a 57 gallon display tank with 1 MP40 for water movement. We lost power at my house and I'm not sure how long it will be out because there's massive outages all over the city... I have a battery backup on the MP40, but not on the return pump, so the MP40 is the sole means of water movement right now.

I would like the maximize the time that the MP40 can run on the battery, so I'd like to turn off reef crest and run it on the lowest setting. Is that enough water movement for my corals and fish to get the oxygen they need during the blackout?

Thanks

As long as you have surface agitation to mix in oxygen molecules you should be ok for a while.

Just lost power as well ...... waaaaah!

We were out for 5 hours. Had the generator running three tanks, one light bulb in the family room and the heaters and radios in my girls’ rooms. :)

I’m so happy to have it.

I use a deep cycle marine battery as the backup for my MP40, and soon for a couple Tunze Stream 3's. For the MP40, it lasted 4 days or so with no issue after Irma hit us before power was restored. Battery and a couple parts at a Radio Shack that hand't closed yet was all that was needed. Cheap(relatively anyway, battery was $90) and easy to do. Long lasting too.

We lost power 2 nights ago at about 2am and came back on about 9:30am. Didn’t have any lost coral or dead fish. Last year I was out for 14 hours once and same thing, no losses. I’m lightly stocked on fish so I would assume the more fish you have, the more toxins can build quicker. I’ve only got 2 fish in a 29 gallon but stocked with sps and zoas.

I have a sad update. All of the fish died. It was not due to loss of water movement, but rather temperature in the tank I think. It fell below 50 degrees in the house, and the heat/power is still off. They were not gasping at the surface when my husband checked on them, just lying on the bottom... a couple hours later and they are gone.

Yeah. Not much else to say. It’s a bad day.
