I'm setting up a mixed reef Reefer 450 and it will have sand, special grade reef, and I'm looking for help deciding which powerheads to go with. I like the laminar flow from the gyres but maintenance is a pita! I like the look of mp40s on the back wall but not sure if that would provide enough flow to keep sticks in the upper portion of the tank.

FWIW:
Just soak the Gyre in vinegar.

No need to break it down.

:)

I've had multiple mp40s and mp10s. I decided to give gyres a try. On my current build, a 50 cube it has 2 Gyre xf250s mounted vertically on opposite sides of the overflow. Creates a whirlpool in the tank. Won't be going back to vortechs

I have 2 XF-250's on my Red Sea Reefer 450.......running 20% ea. I'm very pleased with the flow. I have mine on each side of the tank 1" below the water line facing each other. In all honesty the maintenance is not bad once you get the hang of it.

You put two 250's in a 50 gallon cube?!! WOW! You must have to run them at the lowest setting right? I have two of those for a 6ft. 180 gallon tank. I can't even imagine the fish, lol.;) Any particular reason you didn't go with the lower size if running two of them? Just curious.

Running at 40% right now. Fish and corals won't have a problem. I've kept them in much higher flow before
