What's the best placement of a mp40 to maximize undertow and surface rippling? High, middle, low? I've been running mine slightly above middle and am thinking of changing things up.

To close to the bottom and the undertow will mess up your sand and crushed coral; to close to the top and you'll get too much rippling; I've basically done mine like you seem to have yours - slightly above middle so that I get a little rippling at the surface.

How much rippling do you consider too much? Just an aesthetic choice or will the rippling have a detrimental effect on light transmission?

I have mine approx 8" from the surface on my 120. I'm running one on each side and back. It creates a steady but not violent undertow. I tried placement with just one initially and never had crazy undertow. I do not think with my tank size and rock work I could achieve a strong undertow. It would be nice though.

Do you have mp40's on each side or mp10's? I would expect the undertow to to be pretty strong with 40's unless you have a lot of rockwork.

Ok. I may just have to add another 40 to get the kind of action I'm looking for.

Unfortunately you are probably right. I know I tried different placement many times with one then two. But honestly, with 3 in my 120 sps tank I would not trade it for anything.

I had 3 of the mp40w's before and I don't know if its me or not but I swear the new ecosmart modes seem so much more efficient.
