I have a 6' 125 gallon display. And I am looking to upgrade my flow. It is mostly lps dominated. Which one do you guys recommend????

I had MP40's for many years all the way to the EcoSmart version (not the quiet drive). I had a friend let me borrow a XF150 just to see how it compared. I am sold on the Gyre XF150. This thing moves water way better (IMHO) then the MP40's. It also has a wider flow pattern which I like. My tank is 6ft as well but its also 34 inches wide and I get flow all the way to the other side of the tank. With the mp40's I was hitting about halfway which required 1 on each side at a minimum. Heck I actually had 2 on each side. I now have 2 XF150's (one for each side).

The MP40's are way easier to control though. I did buy the new controller for my Gyre's and it is working great....just takes a little more skill to program on the Apex.....but its not that complicated.

The mp40 is a great pump and personally it's a 6ft tank you'd be better off with a gyre. I'm going to be running both (130) soon. Get the best of both worlds in my carpet cube.

I like the gyre but I feel like if I just put 1 gyre in the tank then it wouldn't have enough random flow. Where as if I did mp 40's then I would have more of a random flow pattern.

Thanks for the input.

I have 2 130's and what a difference in flow from your triditional power heads. I did purchase mp40 and run it in the lower part of the tank and found this a good match of flow.

I had a gyre 150 on a 4 ft tank and personally I wasn’t happy with it. The gyre pushes a lot of water but I found that it wasn’t very good at random flow. I have only been in the hobby for a couple of years so take what I say with a grain of salt but I switched from the gyre back to the MP40 QD and couldn’t be happier. Just my 2 cents.

i was in the same boat and i went with the mp40qd i am very happy with it. i have a 6ft 150 with 1 mp40 and 1 koralia 850 with the mp40 on reef crest almost on max and it moves everything

I just purchased 2, Mp40 Qd's. I installed the first one and it fell off on my concrete floor. You guessed it, broken case. When I switch to feed mode guess what, it falls off. I've not had luck keeping it intact for more that 10-12 hours. I emailed support and got one response yesterday and still waiting for a second. I'm not a happy camper so far. The random flow patterns are great, when it stays on.

do you have the right spacer on for your thickness of glass or acrylic

It's fell off with all the spacers. I have 1/4 glass. You have two spacers that say up to 1/4 and then 1/4 to 1/2. The instructions could use some work or I could use some. haha :-)

Not trying to be mean or anything. But Ecotech send little black plastic things that have adhesive backs on them to hold the cord of the dry side so it doesn't do that. You mount the tabs and use the zip ties and the dry side won't fall.

Unfortunately I did have the tape holder installed. I guess it fell off so much that it came loose. I have since zip tied it to something else as a back up.

Wow. Sorry to here that. I have a Mp40 Qd and have had no issues. I hope Ecotech helps you in resolving your issues with yours.

go with echotech man, you can't beat them I had a grye and liked it but its liniar flow, random flow is what you want. Too many parts as well with the gyre I hated taking mine apart to clean it sucked!

I switched from 2 mp40s and several other circulation pumps in my tank to 1 gyre 150. I feel that the single moves more water than all of the other pumps combined. I was concerned about random flow and put a second gyre on other end of tank and with my apex have the second one come on at intervals to create some turbulence in flow. Seems to be working great. Now with the new gyre controller, you may be able to better alternate gyre like you can with ecotech. My two cents.

Ecotech came through for me. thank you so much.
Customer service is spot on. Power heads are good to.
I'm very happy with the movement with one Mp40 qd in 125- 6 footer. I have mine a little past half ways down in the tank. It creates awesome waves.

I had a MP40 on my old 225 gallon 6' tank and it was great but I also had two Tunzes 6200s. Now I have 1 Gyre 150 on my new 187g 5' long tank and I think that will be enough flow for the entire tank.

I have a mp40 on my 120 and a gyre 150 on my 150. Gyre definetly moves more waterbut mp 40 is easier to do maintiance on. I am getting another mp 40 because of this
