Hello, I currently have 2 MP40qds on my 4 foot tank and have been thinking about possibly swapping it for a maxspect gyre, my tank is viewable from 2 sides with the weir on one of the side panels so I wondered if a maxspect gyre with give better flow/circulation in the tank than my current setup of the 2 MP40s, one on each side?

The gyre does create tons of flow but with your current mp40's you can get variations in your flow from different angles. Just one gyre is going to give you flow from one direction. Don't get me wrong, again the gyre moves tons of water but I would rather have variable flow from two mp40's vs one gyre. If you were able to get two gyres then it's a different story. I have two gyres on my 180, one on each side of the tank and couldn't be happier.

If you haven't put your mp40's on the long wall, try that. One the ends is not ideal.

Two gyres might be better, but might not. Your tank size is just about right for a set of mp40's.

One of any pump will not be as good.

Is the is the maxspect gyre worth the extra money over the ice cap 3k ? Also how many would you put on a 5ft tank 100gal?

This is my first go using 2 MP40s and I am blown away with them. MP40 create amazing flow throughout the tank aswell as the modes such as Gyre, nutrient export and reefcrest mode - Have me wondering if this pump is actually moving up and down. I never new just how great these pumps are but I guess you have to experience it first hand.

I wouldnt go with the gyre for few reasons - I rather not have the motor wire in the tank, does not look good IMO. More of a chore to clean especially when you start getting hard algae and worm growing inside. Also, I've heard they can only be programmed to change directions with varied flow.

I feel these gyre would be a great addition to a already stocked tank thats lacking circulation behind the rockwork. For me the MP40 are the gold standard.

I have 2 gyres on a 4ft tank, I really don't like the flow. I have a mp40 coming, I will use on the side and move the gyres to the back wall.

I would say with a tank that size you're expecting too much from the MP40's.

I know it's not compatible with your viewing experience, but if you wanted to experiment with them both on one of the long-panes you might have better flow that way, but still that's a lot of space for those pumps considering how soft their flow is.

I'd suggest considering some Tunze pumps vs the Gyre, personally. Are you familiar with their options? :)

Depends on tank dimensions. You can have a 4' 12"deep frag tank and the gyre work great to give a sheet of even flow. But add 6" 18-24" and 2 mp40 may not be enough
