I have been using my MP40 without major issues for years. A week ago I noticed the propeller was acting funny. I took the wet side out. It looks like the inside part of the backplate was worn so it is not holding the ceramic washer in place anymore. I tried to crazy glue the ceramic washer, it didn’t hold. I used epoxy to create a support, it did not stick to the plastic. You can see the washer is not held by anything. Any ideas what I can do?

I tried to buy a wet side assembly from EcoTech, the new design is totally different so I now have an assembly that won’t do any good.
I wonder if anyone have parts they don’t use anymore.

It looked so much worn it didn’t look like it needed sanding. But I’ll do that and find maybe a better epoxy
Try something in a 2 part like 5 minute epoxy. It's a 2 part liquid, in a 1 squeeze pen. Should work.

That ceramic washer actually locks into the plastic portion. I can see that part of the plastic plate is broken off. It was relatively common to break that plastic piece if the ceramic piece wasn't installed properly when re-assembling. I'll have to look, but almost positive I have some old MP40 wetside you could have....or at least that plate and ceramic washer portion. My old wetsides all ended up with swollen magnets. Were are you located? I'm in NJ. If you're close by you can stop by.

I am on the other coast. Morgan Hill, CA. I will be happy to pay.. My magnet seems to be Ok for now.

Let me dig around and see what I can find......give me a bit, I'll be back.

Found them.... Here is what you're missing....the raised plastic in the hole aligns with the cut-outs in the ceramic piece and locks it in keeping it from spinning.

When the ceramic piece is put into that hole, it must fit flush with the back plate. If not, that's when you break that plastic back plate.

Sending you a PM.

I was actually surprised your old wetside is still around. I had to replace all four of my old wetsides with the newer version wetsides because all four magnets rusted and swelled, cracking the plastic casing. I just happened to save those four wetsides and that's why I was able to send you that replacement part. I still run the old drysides, with the oldest being 2005. I will state that on two of them I did replace the bearings. Anyway, hope those parts work out for you. Just make sure you don't use vinegar to clean that wetside....I'm thinking that's what caused mine to fail. I talk about that HERE. Glad I could help,

Hi Paul,

I got curious and did a thorough inspection on my magnet. I can see there is a part that started to chip and a bit a swelling started. Maybe I can use some epoxy in that area to slow down the inevitable result.

I have another question since you moved to new type of wetside. In my search of a backplate, I bought a new MP40 assembly from EcoTech. I thought they would be compatible since there were no other assembly. After $60 (shipping and taxes included) I discovered that QD assembly is not compatible at all. I contacted EcoTech support hoping to get some solution, I got a response "oh well", you need a new wetside. Since my old wetside is probably on borrowed time, what do I need to make the wetside assembly operational. A Propeller and a guard or do I need to look for other parts?

Edit: I checked the assembly again, it seems I also need a magnet but it could be part of the propeller in the new design.

Hi @Oceanwolf , You can try to slow the swelling by covering with epoxy, but I think it's inevitable that it will continue to swell and bind up. If you use epoxy, I'd imagine most will have to be sanded off to fit and spin properly. Again, give it a shot and let us know how it works out. Even back in the day when this old style was the only style, you couldn't buy just the magnet. Ecotech parts were very limited. I know that back plate I sent you was one of the available parts because I had to purchase those.

Now, I'm not sure what "MP40 assembly" you purchased. Do you mean wetside? If you got one for $60, you got a bargain. I think I paid $75 each about four years ago, and new wetsides now cost $91.....ouch! I will state that there are no parts on the new wetsides that could be used on the old style....maybe with the exception of the cage. Here's how they look side by side:

The new style wetside will work on any and all MP40's, old or new. I know this because that's what I'm using on my antique drysides.

Now if your "MP40 Assembly" is the driver (controller), I do know that the QD drivers are questionable working for the older style controller. I would guess NOT, and in fact there's issue with whether or not it's mobius or reeflink....that's all beyond my knowledge. I'm guessing you have the same, old controllers I have....the ones along the top and one below:

Edit: I checked the assembly again, it seems I also need a magnet but it could be part of the propeller in the new design.

And to repeat what I said above, the magnet on the new design CAN NOT be used with the old style. The old style magnet had a tapered hole to accept the long threaded bolt, while the new design has the magnet glued directly to the impeller assembly that accepts the ceramic rod.

Thanks Paul. What I received in the package are the two items in your New Style picture. The backplate and the o-ring.
Looks like propeller and magnet are combined and of course the guard has changed to accommodate the new pin style.

I am testing the magnet bulging prevention issue. The crack on my magnet was very noticeable but magnet was not rusted yet. I used Loctite Super Glue "professional liquid" to cover the crack. Using the liquid form allowed it to seep into the crack. I first thought using epoxy, but it would change the balance of the magnet. it is pretty quiet when it is working. I'll check in a month to see if it is holding.
