Hello guys, I'm in the process of putting together a 230 gallon build with a 75 gallon sump.

The sump is going to be in the basement and the main display is going to be upstairs (split level home). I had the floor reenforced for the aquarium. The plumbing from the aquarium spot to the basement laundry room was all done in ceiling by the plumber.

However, I'm going to need the primary Apex unit in the sump room by the 75 gallon sump. (control heaters, probes, return pump, skimmer, etc.)

I'm working with a reef friend that believes he can wire the built in RJ45 cabling in my house (comes out right in the sump room) to USB to match the aquabus pin out of the Apex. It's only used for low voltage, so I think it would be safe to do this.

Has anyone ever done this? are there any issues with this? The plumbing I figured out is running around 50 ft. The RJ 45 would probably run a little less but would guess between 40 and 50 feet.

I know Neptune would say Only use Aquabus cabling. I don't have an easy way to run aquabus cables all the way to the sump room. it would be like 60feet or more of cabling and I would not have an easy way of getting it there. The RJ45 in the house isn't being used for anything and has an outlet near the aquarium, and comes out in the laundry / sump room in the basement...

Alternative suggestions are welcome! I'll be posting a build thread on here, when I have the pics ready. But, I've almost got all the sump plumbing done, and the sump is drilled and in place. I just need to move the skimmer baffle since the skimmer foot print is roughly 18" x 13.5".

I'm fairly certain the AquaBus is of a higher voltage than a standard USB cable, hence why you are NOT supposed to use a standard USB. That being said, I wouldn't do this on an RJ45.

Wasn't implying I'd be using a standard USB... Just a converter... RJ 45 to USB and wiring the RJ 45 to match the aquabus pin out / wiring.

My understanding is the aquabus is just used to send low voltage data pings to and from the controlling bus...

No, I understand you were trying to use a standard USB; I was using that warning as reference.

It does more than carry data pings; it's used to transmit power as well.

You can probably find more knowledge people on this than I on Neptunes' own forum: http://forum.neptunesystems.com/

actually a aquabus cable is just a usb 2.0 cable. as long as your rj45 cable is atleast a 24 awg wire and most are, you shouldent have a problem. just make sure the pinouts match up before you connect it, the AB dose supply power to modules but its not more than 12V and its low amp, but still getting these pins crossed will damage the base or modules. how i know the AB cable is a usb 2.0? when my apex was down support thought it was my cable and had me hook a usb 2.0 cable up. not to mention my AB cable that came from apex with my system says its a usb 2.0 on it. good luck
