Hi All,

I am looking to get 4 from liveaquaria and would like to QT/attempt to train them in a 10 gallon. I was planning to make some dividers to keep each one separate so that they don't fight. Is that a real concern? keeping them separate will also help me organize the food training. Any thoughts are appreciated. TIA!

You would still need to provide pods. And lots of them if you plan to do three. Even mandarins eating frozen graze all day.
How big is your display tank?
What do you want three mandarins?
And is your Dt stocked with pods?
Also look into Paul bs feeder

Actually I am only looking to keep a pair and give 2 to my cousin who has a 225. My DT is 40 gallons but I'm hoping the training goes well, I plan to use white worms as part of the training and worse case to continue feeding going forward. I have a fuge where I add pods quarterly but I don't expect that to be the main source of food.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Plenty of fish out there that don't require changing their eating habits. Even if you get them eating other foods a feeding system will have to be engineered and fed multiple times a day. All while keeping your other fish from getting there first. My mandarin does nothing except hunt all day.

You would definitely need one of Paul bs feeders for a pair of mandarins.

Again your QT tank would also need to be stocked with pods

even mannerisms who eat frozen still mainly eat pods, frozen is the supplement.

I had a single mandarin in a 16 and added pods to my DT frequently and she also ate frozen. Now I have a pair in my 75

the intestinal track of mandarins is short so they have to constantly eat.
I recommend dosing photo to your tank to feed your pod population and adding some pods directly to your DT (lights and flow off)

Paul bs feeder is a way to feed live brine shrimp to the mandarins

I recommend also looking into captive bred mandarins that are already eating frozen and or pellets.

training them to eat frozen is doable. But the mandarins have to a steady source of food from the beginning a hungry mandarin will not necessarily eat frozen just because it is there

I have 3 in my 125 but I wouldn't have them without the huge pod population I have and I use the target feeder that PaulB made to feed freshly hatched brine shrimp babies.

Do yourself a huge favor and pay the higher cost and get them straight from Biota. They are super small, but eat pellets right off the bat. I threw a pair into my 150 mixed reef with lots of large fast fish. 6 months later, they are 2.5" fat and happy. Squirt TDO pellets to them once a day and that is it.

You may want to replan. Even mandarins that do eat some prepared foods, still need to hunt all day. There is literally no downside to having a booming pod population.

What's your qt plan? Mandarins are sensitive to copper and other meds.

Are you able to order 2 male and two female? Add two males together and there will be just one. Without an even count, either you or your cousin could get a set that don't get along and aren't long to be together.

Yeah, hence I asked the question before I go down this path. I've been reading up on humblefish on QT for mandarins but part of my concern was keeping the mandarins separate with dividers. I understand the feeding part is #1 and rightly so, just working out some of the other details as well to see if its worth it at all.

My cousin has several tanks setup so he can keep the 2 he gets separate as needed. Fingers crossed we get 2 pairs but Liveaquaria doesn't have that option.

So hypothetically, diet aside, is there any downside to dividing a 10g into 4 sections for QT? Is it too small, or is tank size related only to pod population?

Thanks everyone!

A standard 10 gallon tank is 20x10x12. Divided into four, I absolutely believe it's too small to quarantine anything longer than a few hours.

You can always put a note in the order requesting 2 pairs. I did when I ordered the 3 I have. Requested they are 1 male and 2 females.
