so about a month ago i started my first ever saltwater tank.

now i have couple more questions
1. about 3 days ago i added 2 turbo snails to the tank. They have been cruising the glass but have not touched the brown algae on the rocks. Will they eventually go after this or do i need to add something separate for that?
2. how much rock is too much? I started with 40lbs of dry white rock then about 2 weeks ago added a 3lb piece of live rock from the lfs. now i am looking at another couple of pieces that the lfs has.
What can i say i am a sucker for pretty things.
3. one of our neighbors stopped by today (the SO woke me up instead of just talking to him) and said he was going to drop off some aquarium stuff later on that he wasnt using. supposedly it is several wavemaker pumps and a cascade filter. I tend not to say no to free stuff so of course i said yes. I just looked up the filter and it is a canister filter. are these good for saltwater tank or do i need to set up a freshwater tank as well ?

Hey Joey, So your tank is 38 gls ? I'd think You have plenty of rock in there now.
we will need to see pics of the stuff your friend gave Ya before a comment.
I'd think a canister for a 38 gl would be fine.All depends .

canisters are fine. Just gotta clean em out every now and again. Don't clean too much or u will lose all the beneficial stuff...
U can rinse everything in old sw when u do a wc or u can rinse stuff under the sink. Just don't rinse it all. Do the sponge or the rings not all.
U can run carbon in em too to get the water clearer. U can put prob 10 snails and 10 hermit crabs in that tank and b okay for awhile.

Look at the live rock pieces for aptasia. U don't want this. Some of my 1st live rock was flordia keys rubble and I got lots of hitchhiker crabs. like 2 or 3...
I haven't bought LR in prob 6-8yrs. Just recently I seeded my tank with a piece from Petco. It was more "alive" than anything else I had.

at this point i have 2 turbos and 7 hermits. nothing has touched the white rock but the hermits hang out on the one piece of live rock

Looks like I have a teeny tiny baby turbo

Looks like good equiptment depending on how big the pumps are I'd say use it all. There's nothing wrong with adding more rock if you want too.

Should I run it along with my hob or by itself? I googled the pumps they are 520 gph. I already have two about the same power in the tank.

What kind of hob filter? I'd say the canister is probably better as long as it gets cleaned regularly

i am currently running a 200gph penguin biowheel hob. and to clarify the two power heads in the second picture are 520gph . i have no idea what the flowrate is on the canister. i have tried googling it by the numbers on the back but have not really found anything conclusive. it appears to be a cf50 but i have been unable to locate any specs for it. I also have no idea how i should clean it before i use it. Should I just run RO through it ? the same with the powerheads.
