I was sure it was a deal but not sure what kind it is. Thank you for the help in advance!

That looks to me like a cabbage leather coral (Sinularia brassica) rather than a mushroom, but I'm not that experienced with coral ID.

don't do it, it's the least attractive color in reefing, brown.
That is a matter of aesthetic opinion. Natural reefs often have brown corals, though they are offset by many colorful corals that are extremely difficult to keep in captivity.

I would not want a reef aquarium of mostly brown corals but must say that I would not mind some brown myself.

Already did it. The pic is from my tank.

The top mushroom is about 4 in. Wide.

Oh and I agree some brownish corals look nice in a reef surrounded by other colors. It makes it feel natural. I was given a brown toadstool with white tips and I think it looks great!

A happy colony of cabbage coral looks great! Very unique growth.

Lfs had no clue what it was.
That’s concerning. Cabbage leathers are one of the most common, been-in-the-hobby-the-longest corals there is. If your lfs didn’t know what it was, I wouldn’t trust their advice about anything really.
