I normally dont ask for help on the boards but I can't seem to find anything on this and its frustrating. This is the kinda thing that makes me want to up and drop the hobby. I have had this mushroom for years and it has taken years to get multi color. Yesterday I added a Fiji Hoven wrasse to my frag tank (only fish in the tank) and this happens. At about three oclock last night I got done feeding and doing a check before I went to bed and this was fine. The wrasse was sleeping next to this but it looked fine. Now today this is what happened. Mother looks like this and one of the two babys it just let off are dead for sure, Any ideas whats wrong

Yesterday mother

Oh man, that totally sucks Mat. Sorry to see such a nice piece in that state. I can't think of anything that would do that kind of damage and that fast, except a sting from another coral. Is it close to anything that sends out tenticles? Are you sure this happened overnight? sometimes I don't notice something is wrong because my view of the specific coral is limited to viewing it through the glass. It's only when I pull it out and closely examine it, that I can see it's complete body. This could have been something that was happening over time but you didn't notice it. Only other thing I can think of is the wrasse picking under it to get to any critters (pods, worms, etc..), irritating it to the point of death, but again that is a long shot guess.

I'm 100% sure it happened over night.

anything with stingers or tenticles close by to it? From the left side of the picture I can see a thread leading off the frag or maybe I'm just seeing things.

That was like a orange mucus it was most likely the orange pigment from the coral nothing's close at all.

sorry that happened Matt dayum!!! I wonder if the wrasse was picking around it too much and stressed it out?

do the Hoven warsses make cocoons to sleep in?

Think it's possible to recover?

Man, I don't see that mother surviving. If it keeps getting worse, and it were up to me, I would cut the base and hope it grows back from that. If not it might just keep melting until there is nothing left.

This could be it. I am not sure if these wrasses make mucus cocoons to sleep in at night, but a lot of wrasses do. If this is the case with the Hoven Wrasse, it could be that the mucus is poisonous when it comes in direct contact with a coral? I am not sure of this, just looking at a possible answer to this freak incident.

My next guess would be picking at it in search of food. However I have had my wrasse pick at zoas, chalices, and acans and no damage was done.

seems like the only logical thing that could have happened, I do know they are sand wrasses but with little or no sandbed to burrow in than it could have made a cocoon too close and somehow came into contact with the shroom

I kinda think it was the wrasse.

Sorry to hear and see the outcome of your prize shroom's......had a Hoven's wrasse on my fish list...may put that thought on hold for now..have my game over dreams come to a complete halt....Hope they make a speedy recovery. If anyone can pull them through I am sure you can. Best of luck!!!

Really sorry to hear/see that Matt. That shroom was beautiful. I'm with you and the others on this and would tend to pin it on the wrasse. Hope it heals up for you. Good luck
