I had just made my tank yesterday but i got all my water, LR, and coral from an existing tank that has been running for years. This morning, the mushrooms were bright and open! I fed the fish some brine shrimp and left it at that for hours. I came back around 12 hours after to turn the lights off and they were all shriveled up or closed. Is this normal?

sure, anytime you disrupt a tank that's been running for year, the corals are bound to get a little stressed. Give em time and it should balance out. :)

Should i keep them towards the top or move them towards the bottom? It's a pretty shallow tank, only about a foot deep with a .5" sand bed.

Even though you used LR from an existing tank you still need to watch for elevated ammonia and nitrite levels. Insta tank is hard to pull off, water chemistry still needs to be monitored carefully for a couple weeks. Water holds very little nitrifying bacteria so that is a mote point.
Mushrooms do not require the same intense lighting as many stony corals.

What lighting type are you using and how big is the tank.

I think the mushrooms were just closed for the night

I'm using Zoo Med's AquaSun Quad T5HO with 4 26w bulbs so its not overwhelming in a 20g long tank.

What kind of shrooms are these, can someone help me

Left one looks like Rhodactis, the other Actinodiscus perhaps.
