Everyone has one...That ONE coral, fish, or invert that you MUST have in every reef system that you set up...You know, like the mandatory Kole Tang, or the perfect Acro colony.

I was thinking about this not long ago as we were stocking our new nano tank in the office. When you have limited space, you have to make great choices...And sometimes, this means picking that ONE awesome coral over just about anything else. However, if you have the room, there surely must be one coral that you MUST have in your reef!

For me, every reef tank has to have at least one colorful zoanthid colony...yup- a reef just isn’t a reef without one! Virtually every type of reef benefits from the color of beautiful zoas or palys. Every SPS reef has to have one Acropora chesterfieldensis, in my humble opinion..Not having one would be a like having a garden without flowers!

What is that one animal that you just cannot have a reef tank without? Curious reefers want to know!

Have a good weekend...WE'll be at Reefapalooza here in SoCal this weekend, so if you're attending, stop in and say hello!

Red Planet, Cespit, and a really nice torch.

I love all corals... but I'm a sucker for Zoas and Palys

Wow, tough decision time. Let's do one from each category....

SPS - ORA Pearlberry. It's hardy, beautiful, and grows well.

LPS - A killer rainbow open brain. Cheap and colorful when compared to some other LPS.

ZOA - Candy Apple Reds. Nothing more beautiful than a grown out colony and reasonable priced too.

SPS= Pearlberry
Zoas= my tank has angel so zoas are just food
LPS= I love Elegance corals even though I don't have one

Sps it would be a pink lemonade.
Zoas would be candy apple reds hands down.
Softy would have to be a yuma. A simple pink yuma would be perfect.
LPS... a nice plate coral will do. :)

There's so many corals out there that are high end because of hype. But for me it's the oldies that I'd have to always have. They're like the foundation of this coral hobby for me.

And a clown fish......As far as corals it's what ever I can get my paws on.....I dunno how ur guys lfs is but in Milwaukee it's a crap shoot....buy what they got when they got it....Although I have just recently started ordering corals online...for the longest I was hesitant but I gotta say I dunno what I was waiting for lol....so to anybody who doesnt trust it like I didn't , go for it....obviously stick to vendors who have a good reputation and there is nothing like waking up in the morning and waiting for FedEx to show up...and when u open that box.....better then Christmas.....

'Must Haves'...hmmm, this is a tough one since there are so many! :)

If I had to set up a tank with only one coral type, it'd be Ricordia, especially R. yuma.

I couldn't imagine a tank without a few colorful, fleshy Palys and Acans.

SPS would be Montipora setosa and I really like most of the 'Deepwater' Acropora types.

My must have isnt a coral, it is a fish. I couldnt have a salt tank without a nice mandarin in it. A tank without a mandarin is like water without salt. Sure it can be done, but why??

It would be way cooler if everyone posted pics of their favorites so those of us who are not as familiar had a reference :-)
