Hey guys, I’m starting a small frag tank, I’ve heard from a few sources that frag tanks don’t really need to be cycled because corals aren’t effected by ammonia/nitrite/nitrate like fish are. Any truth to this?

Depends on the long term purpose of the frag tank... is it going to temporary or permanent? Can you give us more details about the setup you're planning? While it may not "need" to cycle it's definitely beneficial to have an established biofilter.

It will be long term, there’s no reason I couldn’t cycle it, just wondering when I should go ahead and put corals in

I asked a similar question to my LFS and was told basically this: It's always better to wait the cycle, but some coral aren't as sensitive and can be fine (even if not fully all the way happy) in these conditions. You're basically "cheating" the process with a calculated risk, and the tank will cycle eventually anyways. I'd suggest a starter bacteria or established bio-media to seed it anyways.

My situation was a little different because I needed to get my coral out of my display in a hurry. Algaebarn has a combo that's Fritz turbostart, and their own cycle product that worked really well for me. Meets the advertised "cycled" in 5 days claim. Cycled in quotes because its bare minimum cycling.
