MXM module

Yeah, this was a pretty disappointing launch and I really am hoping that more updates will come with legacy product support soon. I've been in product development and marketing for a long time now and overall this screams of a mess going on with the general merging/collaboration of teams at Aperture, specifically on the programming side of things.

Not having Versa support seems like the largest miss. Of all of the equipment on a tank, I feel that the most value out of the MXM would be to control dosing whether it's 3-part, ATO, or AWC. The most simple example is being able to use the Versa for auto-dosing based on Trident measurements. I am still holding out hope that Versa support will also mean I can run one as an intelligent ATO alongside the liquid level sensor (LLS).

Second to the Versa miss, the nice-to-control aspects of controlling return pumps and wavemakers are nice but not initially supporting anything but the latest devices feels short-sighted. Neptune should be fully aware of the fact that the examples of how you can use the MXM are already happening for those of us with the Apex. Feed mode to turn down your pumps? Cool. But is that really any better than just turning off the pumps like most probably are already doing via the Apex? As @BroccoliFarmer mentioned, is anyone really needing to change their lighting or flow that often other than on/off? The only thing out the gate that I can see value in is being able to trigger feed mode on the Vectra pumps to not siphon; everything else you can control I cannot even think of the last time I touched the set schedule.

While I am eager to eventually pick one of these up eventually but given the general miss on the delivery timeline and now the lack of support for anything other than the most recent products, of which I have a few, it makes the most sense to me to wait and see how this product see updates come in and performs for those that are early adopters.

$119 is not a bad price for its abilities to share products. I have a friend who is a tester for ecotech and said he had minor issues with first prototype but overall very satisfied with module

I had a chance to order these this morning...and I decided to pass. All I have is the vortechs but then I realized...how often do I actually change my flow patterns. I would ask the same questions about Radions..how often would I change my lighting.

Saved 130 bucks.
I'm more interested in Vectra M2 control. Sometimes they seem to have a mind of their own, being 'smart' pumps and all. They seem to speed up and slow down at times, which causes other issues, like triggering my ATO unnecessarily, which cause salinity, ph and alk fluctuations. I've posted this topic on R2R, and it seems to be a common issue with M2's. ETM was not helpful either, they seem to think cleaning and calibration is the solution to everything. Anyway, a slowdown has happened when I'm away on vacation, and I can do NOTHING about it, unable to use Mobius to tweak pump speeds. I would like to be able to have code written in Fusion to react to such events, and keep the pump speeds consistent, and therefore the water levels.

That being a concern for my L2 as well. It appears that the issue you're describing had been addressed and resolved.

I don't think the Versa communicates to the Mobius in the exact same way as the other EcoTech devices do so there is likely some more that needs to be updated before this happens, I could be wrong though and maybe there is some other reason why. The use case scenario is good for the Versa to be integrated as much as a DOS as you mentioned for things like an ATO, dosing based on the Trident, etc so I hope this is something that is in the works with future updates.

Personally I think legacy devices seem a bit unnecessary for the most part. The older AI lights worked on a wifi connection and already integrate via IOTA (Aquaillumination Prime™(marine variant), PrimeHD™, Hydra 26HD™, and Hydra 52HD™ LED) and the older EcoTech Devices aren't Mobius Compatible since they don't use Bluetooth connection and already have Apex integration via the WXM. The Gen 4 Radion is the only legacy device I could see being integrated as some are Mobius compatible, so I do hope to see that. Do keep in mind this is the Mobius Expansion Module, so I don't think they'll be integrating non-Mobius devices into this that aren't already in Mobius.

Yeah, I was mainly referring to the Mobius-ready legacy devices including those supported via the ESL. If I understand the flow currently, the communication is still going through the Mobius platform with the MXM so it shouldn't really be an issue to support the 1st gen Vectra pumps, for example. Ecotech products are made to last, so why not continue to support those that have been doing just that for aquarists?

Seems like the Versa would be programmed similar to the Dos ultimately with maybe a few extra modes needed to better support the continuous modes the Versa is made for. If they don't plan on supporting this with the MXM is it a HUGE miss IMO. I am hopeful it will eventually happen though especially considering all of the marketing materials that went out this morning mistakenly mentioned controlling the Versa for "photo mode" :winking-face:

Being able to change my Vortechs and Blades from anywhere in my home or while at work or while on vacation is well worth the $120 for me. Do I change them often? Nope. Almost never. Will I be super glad I spent a $120 to change something from far away in the off chance something did happen while I was gone? Absolutely. Super cheap insurance and redundancy in my book.

Did Neptune miss the mark on some things? Absolutely. Thankfully some software updates can remedy that. Trident controlled dosing through the Versa is an absolute MUST IMO. The loud DOS pumps will be replaced tomorrow if they allow this.

Still at work, but I had some time during lunch to review a little bit more. Still unsure on what the VARSPD tabs do that showed up after adding MXM, but I found on web OS (not App) that if I click on the VORTECH "gear", I can pull up a menu/day timeline where I can set and adjust end points for both flow levels and several presets. Updated to Apex but since I'm not local cannot verify what transpired. Will update once I have more information.

Could you not already control them through the myAi app? Bringing them all into once place is nice to have but I never really had a problem jumping between Apex, Ai, Mobius, or GHL (albeit a terrible experience from GHL) for my various devices. The power of the MXM is where monitoring from one device can then control another from a different platform. Beyond turning them on or off I dont see much value in having that connection with lighting by everyone is different on this front so I'm not disagreeing with you

I believe (at least for the Mobius part) the ability to monitor and adjust over IP/Internet out side of the in-home's Bluetooth interface is a well needed addition (Previous Reeflink with its limitations aside).

Only when you are standing 10 feet from them. MyAI is bluetooth only and not WiFi so I can't control them from work if I absolutely must in some random emergency. I can turn their power off from my Apex EB but no control.

I can't even really think of a situation where I would need to change light settings from a distance but I am sure it will happen some random day when my wife is home with the tank and I won't be able to do anything about it. Then the $120 is well worth it to not get THAT text :grinning-squinting-face:

So based on the ReefDudes livestream with Paul from Neptune, it seems pretty up in the air on whether the MXM will ever support the Versa or some of the legacy, Mobius enabled, devices. Paul kept mentioning technical challenges that he wouldn't go into detail on. So to me this seems like they might be trying but also it didn't seem like a priority to them right now.

Pretty disappointing to hear this and maybe I am just imagining this but I thought originally they specifically called out the Versa being a thing. Without Versa support or support for at least some of the more recent legacy products (1st gen Vectra for example) I personally don't see much value in the MXM.

Feedback helps drive priority...

While generally true, Paul did not make it sound like that is the case here. He mentioned a few times in the live stream that there were technical issues with integration that "he wasn't going to get into". This sounds like they are looking forward to new product development and not looking at older products or products that have pretty large technical challenges to integrate.

If they went through a typical product research phase it likely was probably pretty obvious Versa integration with the MXM was high on the list over being able to control over something that most people "set and forget" like lighting schedules. It's not to say the other integrations are not welcomed but without a better answer from Paul or others at Neptune it really seems like the Versa integration might not ever happen. Maybe because a 2nd gen is on the way or maybe they just want to continue to push the Dos and Trident product lines. No one really will ever know

I will say the livestream left me far more confused than it answered anything.

If I was on the fence about buying one, that live-stream kicked me to the do not buy club. What is the livestream for if you won’t go into the technical issues of why certain items weren’t added? Sounded much more like “well if we include Versa control, no one is going to buy the loud DOS again.” Wreaks of corporate greed to me. At a minimum share a few details of why it won’t work

Could be that, or that they've learned from their past mistakes. No matter what they say as the reason, someone is going to dissect it and catagorize it as a poor excuse, then others will pile on. It's their prerogative whether or not to divulge the reason.

Which is why I'm sticking to my guns and say, feedback drives priority.

I saw all your profiles in apex for the vortex lol
