Hi everyone, this will be my first build thread in 10+ years, and I'm looking forward to documenting the life of my tank here.
This build started in November of 2017. For 5 years prior I had gone through college and many different housing situations in a new place (South Florida), none of them long term enough to even considering setting up a large reef. My 40b kept me happy and moved with me 3 times, however I never put much thought into it and it basically became a fish only tank for my clownfish pair (they survived for a week without power after Hurricane Irma!). A good opportunity came up to purchase my first home, and with that came the idea of a new reef. I immediately began researching tank sizes, and decided I didn't want a standard tank and overflow, as I hated the layout of my 90g years ago. I found SCA not long into my search and got in contact with them. It just so happened that they were taking pre-orders on their new 150 drilled for a 16" synergy overflow, and for the price I couldn't turn it down. I ended up ordering the tank well before I moved into the new place. After delivery in March of last year, life got hectic (new house, new boat and business, etc.) and the project got pushed back for a few months. I learned that the spot I decided on for the tank has very unlevel floors (concrete), so I decided on ordering an aluminum stand with 6 leveling feet instead of jacking up a wooden stand 2" on one side! This was a major cost I hadn't factored in. I did slowly acquire gear over the last year, and just last month I finally got the time and funds to get some larger items, including my Framingtech stand. I love the stand, made leveling a breeze and looks very nice, plus gives me more room inside the stand for equipment. Would highly recommend Framingtech. Getting the tank on the stand gave me the shove I needed to get everything finished up, and I plan on ordering myself my light fixture for my birthday in 3 days, which is the last major piece of equipment I need to get going.
Equipment and other goodies I've gathered up to this point:
  • 150 gallon 60x24x24 SCA tank
  • Fluval SP4 return pump
  • Nyos 160 skimmer - Won at RAP Orlando 2018 raffle! Was super psyched about this, great event and look forward to this years.
  • 40b DIY sump
  • 16" Synergy Shadow overflow
  • Gyre xf250 w/ advanced controller - Bought this 6 months ago and was disappointed to hear they have already upgraded. May sell this NIB and buy the 300 series before getting it wet
  • 2x Jebao PP8 - Love these, have had them for 3 years and they haven't missed a beat
  • Tunze 3155 ATO
  • 115 lbs Marco rock w/ e-marco 400 - 100 lbs base, 15 lbs flat cut
  • 25 lbs TBS live rock - This stuff only spent 3 hours in the mail to get to me and has been curing in its own 20g tank for about a year now, never touched air. Fed reef roids to keep filter feeders and bacteria going. Should help my cycle quite a bit.
  • 90 lbs Reefflakes
  • Black and grey PVC
  • 2x 200w Eheim Jager heaters w/ Ranco controller
  • 2x 20g fish QT's, 1 10g coral QT with all meds
  • 20 amp dedicated circuit run to the tank equipped with 2 GFCI outlets, plus another on a separate circuit to plug a few pumps into.
Lighting will be back to old school, 8x80w ATI fixture. Never had luck with LEDs like the old lighting and am ready for a plug and go reliable fixture again. The tank will hopefully be SPS dominant supplied by just a few top notch sellers, with zoas, and perhaps some LPS. I plan on ordering a doser once my cycle has started and have plenty of BRS 2 part. I'll eventually add a controller and plan on going GHL as they are right up the road from me. I also stocked up on Prodibio Biodigest, nopox, and microbacter7. I plan on inducing a bacterial bloom of sorts upon startup to kickstart my cycle.
So now that I've bored you to death, what you came for, some pictures!

My mountain of junk. My girlfriend is looking forward to getting her bench back!

Some samples of my established TBS rock. That white colony started as just 1 polyp.

Hard to find time for this build in the last year when you do this for a living!
Thanks to anyone reading for stopping by and tagging along, I hope to have this thing up and running in the next 2 weeks! Stay tuned.

Looks good. Curious on the quality of the SCA.
Better than I expected to be honest. I got the tank for a steal compared to any other custom tanks of the same magnitude. Great communication by the company, and the tank is gorgeous, not a single scuff, and the silicone job is perfect, not one air bubble or glob of silicone.

Slowly making progress over here. Ordered myself the ATI 8x80w sunpower, 2 maxspect bioblocks, 90 lbs of reefflakes, and a bucket of salt to fill the tank. Also hung my gyre, leak tested my plumbing, got everything strapped down in case of accidental bumps, and then got to work mocking up my rock work. I will be cementing everything together with e Marco 400, other than the TBS rock. The TBS rock is mostly smaller stuff that I can fit in wherever and the few larger rocks I have plans for. I wanted to have space behind my rock work in this tank so that I have an open view through the whole tank on both sides of the rock work, and to allow for more flow around the rocks. Hopefully I get it cemented and in the tank with sand, plus light hung by this weekend. Here's a quick shot of my rocks so far, both structures are about 16" tall, which I figure will be about 6" below the waterline. I'm open to any suggestions.

Rock is in! Only took 3 days of minor masonry work and concrete mixing. I'm pretty happy with it. Lights, sand and maxspect bio bricks come in tomorrow. It's starting to feel like a real tank instead of a reminder of an empty bank account! Hooray! How do you guys like the rockwork? 25 lbs TBS rock will be added throughout once it's filled.

Got my big shipment in today, I feel like a kid on Christmas. Got the sand in the tank, and will be hanging the fixture later tonight. She's almost there!

The fixture passes the ocular patdown from my in house security (very happy it isn't damaged, have been having terrible luck the last few shipments)

Now to fill it up... Should only take about a week!

SO I spoke a little too soon it seems! ;)
Ended up having one broken Purple+ bulb, and the reflectors and acrylic shield got a little banged up as well. I emailed BRS and hopefully I get it all taken care of.
I did hang it and turn 6 bulbs on, and it looks marvelous! My 40 gallon right next to it with kessils looks dark when I turn this thing on. Can only look better with 2 more bulbs. In the end I don't need light over the tank for the first month or two anyways, so I'm not too worried about it. Here's the finished product, minus the white laminated door panels, but who wants to see that...

Definitely looks a whole lot whiter and brighter in person.

I finished up water changes on all my other tanks and water is now dripping into the new system.
I am very impressed with the maxspect bioblocks. They came packaged very well, and are much more durable than any other biological filter media I've ever seen. I poured water on one and they absorb a few cups of water without anything dripping out the back, pretty wild. Took one and plopped it in the HOB running my live rock tank just to get it going.

Following. Ordered a 150 two days ago. I'm excited.

What's your impressions on the glass clarity? I'm coming from a 120 marineland standard glass.

Sweet, you'll love it. The glass clarity is awesome, I can't really tell there's glass there at all when I look into it empty. Definitely a whole lot clearer than my 40g even with double the thickness of glass.

Ok .Good. I was a little concerned that it isn't true starphire .They call it Starfire .lol

Haha I was worried about the same thing, for the price these tanks are almost too good to be true. Very, very happy with the tank. My pallet came mangled and it was gut wrenching unwrapping it, but the forks from the lift missed my tank by 1/4" and crushed the styrofoam! Near miss, not a scratch in the end.

Are the Return bulk heads for 3/4 pipe? I am wrapping up ordering PVC pipe.

Are you a Guide? I live on the Alabama Gulf Coast. I fisherman myself! :)

I am! I guide out of Sanibel island. It's truly paradise. Boat has been in the shop for 2 weeks now so I'm using the free time to wrap this tank up. Getting the boat back Monday, and then it's going to be 8+ hours a day of tarpon fishing til August.
Return plumbing is 3/4" bulkheads yes.

Oh wow. I'm mainly a bass fisherman (mobile Delta.) In the fall brackish water moves in and I catch reds and specs.

I've never call a tarpon. They come up into Mobile Bay. But I'm not aware of which part of the year. Tarpon is on my bucket list

You also have two terrible hobbies. Reef tanks and a boat. Money money money. Lol

At least you make a living with the boat.
