my 40 gallon zoanthid tank

Beautiful tank ya got there, great colors and a wide assortment of zoos. I'm looking to do something similar with my 40 breeder, one of the first things that struck me is the amount of flow you got in there, a 45 @ 1200 gph and a pair of 55s - are they running continously at different speeds or have you got them alternating or something. Even dialed down you're looking at 40x turnover in there not to mention your OC 2500 return pump, any of the bigger palys not like that - do you move them around to see what is happy and where or just throw 'em on in ??
I'm running a single 45 with a Koralia Nano just to keep the backside flowing, along with my return pump I'm always concerned I have too much flow. I would imagine if your controller is making things pretty random that might be a good thing for the zoos which in nature are found in low level more turbulent areas if I remember correctly. Any thoughts about that.....
What's been your experience with placement of the zoas in regards to lighting and color ? Are you basically just putting them in there with no concern for color loss/morphing and just fitting them in your tank giving your size limits as being the most important thing - or are you moving things around maybe trying to mix and match colors and/or seeing what does best where ??
What sort of dipping or QT are you doing, if you're doing, when you get a new variety of zoanthid to add to the garden of eden ??

My controller is the real simple tunze 7091.
The power 1 is set at near minimum and power 2 is set at max., with the pulse at max.
I've always had alot of flow in my zoanthid tanks. IMO, they just do better with alot of flow. As long as it is wide flow like the tunzes provide.
I don't really that much attention to where they go at first. But if they don't seem to be doing well, I'll usually move them to a shady spot and see how they do. I do have some that don't seem to like direct light.
When the first really electric blue zoanthids started showing up on the net, I jumped in with both feet and spent $300-$350 of some colonies, just to have them fade to a grey color. Real bummer. Even today with ones like Tubbs blues, I keep them down near the bottom.
I'm glad you mentioned dipping and QT.
I usually will place new stuff in my 240 softy tank for a week or so and watch even if they look good when I get them. Many times I do a freshwater dip and put them in the 240.
Never straight into the zoanthid tank.
Except a week ago Saturday. I went to a frag swap at a local club meeting and stayed way longer than I was suppose to.
Got home late and needed to do some errands and for some reason I just threw the bags in the zoanthid tank, floated them for 10 minutes, added tank water to the bags and 10 minutes later dropped them in.
It was all right, I knew the people. I knew the vendors. I'd bought and traded with everyone before. What could go wrong???
3 days later when I got home from work and I noticed 1 of the new colonies (of 3) and 1 old one was closed up. At any given time some polyps can be closed up, but not usually 2 colonies next to each other.
I grabbed my reading glasses and a magnifing glass and sure enough there were big adult nudibranchs on both colonies.
So I ended up down freshwater dips on all the pieces in the corner where they were at and moved them out to the 240.
I started a thread on another site about the ******* move I made.
Well one the people who responded gave a link to a web page about using real strong Flat Worm Exit dips. Up to 2 drops per cup of tank water.
A couple nights later I found 2 more pieces in the tank closed up with a couple nudi's on it, so I decided to experiment. First I tried a strong dip in ReVive. Nothing happened. So I tried the strong FWE dip.
I was amazed. The nudi's just seemed to disolve. I mean with in 20-30 seconds. In pieces.
So I did the whole tank with it. 4 times the recommended dose, and I'm ready to do it again if I see any more nudi's show up. I haven't seen any since I dosed the whole tank 2 days ago.
It makes me mad at myself, because I knew better.
You always have to use a QT tank, and do the dips, period.

Hey, looks like a couple of weeks have passed since your last post. I assume you don't have any fish in the tank, or if I'm wrong did the overdose of FWE cause any harm to the fish ? I guess no harm came to the zoas.....
Are you running carbon or GFO in that tank ? I've just started running GFO and watched two large colonies of zoas melt away in a bout a week or 10 days, I had a filefish (the only fish in the tank) die also.....not sure if they are related or not.
I'm gonna get me another powerhead or two, I'm really struggling with a cyno problem, my nitrates are at zero - as are the phosphates but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I'm gonna fire up a GFO filled reactor on that tank and see if my zoas suffer any ill effects.

I'm surprised it took so long to for someone to notice the stupid mistake I made.
I did have a lawnmwer blennie in the tank, but I moved him to my 240 before did the FWE treatment. I have been looking for a wrasse to put in it, but I haven't found the right one yet.
I did add a small carbon reactor to the tank for a few days after I dosed with the FWE, but I don't normally run it all the time.
The FWE didn't affect any of my zoanthids, only the nudi's.
I lost a couple pieces. I don't if it was because of the nudi's or the treatment or a combination of both.
I've heard that filefish aren't the best fish to keep with zoanthids.
I've read a couple threads where they end up eating them.

Thing are doing pretty good. I think I got past the nudibranch problem.
Now I see a little bryopsis on a couple frags. Gonna have to deal with that right away.
Yeah as soon as one tank starts filling you start looking for another tank or just a bigger on.lol
Got a couple new pieces last week. I'll try and get some new pictures posted.
I have a new camera that's kicking my butt. It's tough for a old dog to learn new tricks
ya i traded some zoas and got a custom small tank i think 3 gallons its a all in one and i am going to try leds on it to see what colors i get out of my zoas and groth want to try them and i cam build a small one cheep so when i get it set up you are welcome to come by and see it if you want ok
and what is your plan to get rid of the bryopsis

It's only growing on 3-4 frags, so I thought I'd pull out what I could, scrub with a brass tooth brush and then a little super glue where it was growing.
