Hello all,
I was a former hobbyist who had his heart broken in a fire a long time ago. I swore I would never get back into reefing again but it will be two years in January that I have had my tank. Things have changed substantially and for each thing I thought I knew I realize that I am barely scratching the surface:
My equipment:
55G Tank
Remora S Pro Skimmer (HOB)
9w UV filter
GFO & Carbon Dual Reactor
10G Sump
EcoTech Radion XR30w Pro LED lights (Setup on 9/5/2014)
Hydor Koralia pumps (3 of them - and they all suck)
The things I have learned?
You can never skimp on equipment. I started out with T5 lights, then moved to LED, and then realized that the LED wasn't strong enough and upgraded to the XR30w. In other words I wasted like $700 on lights and could have purchased the top of the line at the beginning. I have also learned that opinions are a dime a dozen and you can't always believe what you read. You have to read, experiment, fail, try again and eventually you get it right.
My tank has a bunch of fish, including two fish that shouldn't be there (Hippo and Yellow Tang). Both have been in the tank for over a year and you would be hard pressed to think they were stressed but eventually they will need to go. I have all types of coral, softies, LPS, SPS...you name it I have tried it. Not always successful but I love to tinker. My great love is Zoas. Something magical about having a carpet of color in your tank. I also love the softies.
My next purchase? I would like a controller like a Apex Gold and I need real power heads. I am thinking of Eco Tech or Tunze. Either way, I need to replace my Hydors.
