I've read about it. Soft corals, such as sinularia, exude a number of chemical compounds that can irritate or inhibit the growth of other corals. Some people avoid mixing leathers with SPS's, but other people use GAC and do regular water changes to minimize the chemical warfare.
Yes, I do. I have a variety of them. My SPS's grow pretty well despite whatever chemicals the softies throw at them. I do see damage by harpooning LPS's, though.
I was just looking at my Valentine Damicornis last night and noticed that tips where not extending like the rest of the coral so I was looking around and came across that.
I have read mixed reports on the effect of running GAC long term. Do you have an opinion on that, Tomoko?[/QUOTE]
A lot of people do it without any issue. HLLE may be an issue with tangs if you don't rinse off the fine powder. Harry runs it in a reactor. I throw mine in the sump (placed in a section of old pantyhose)
M@ry Ruth has a couple of big leathers in her tank and we can't keep Acros in there. They slowly lose color and start melting away. Stylopora, Seriatoporia, and Pocillipora seem to do just fine. I think it is because of the leathers. Her tank and two of mine are all plumbed together with a common sump and Acros grow fine in my tanks which have no leathers. The sump has a skimmer which I don't think is all that efficient (I built it because I couldn't afford one of the megabucks models for that much water). I also run GFO and carbon in the sump 24/7. I change the carbon once a month. The water rushes through the sump so fast that I can't imagine the skimmer and carbon have an opportunity to remove it all. Despite all the water movement, it appears that the concentration of toxins from the leathers remain higher in her tank than in mine. Everything elsehttp://harrysfrags.com/thumbnails.aspx?cat=Seriatopora is the same.
