My Anemone has had a baby .....

Came home from work today to find my Anemone seems to have let go about 10% of its area about 6mm (1/4") away from the new edge of the disc ..... is this good or not?

Most nems typically don't reproduce via budding. When splitting they are usually even 50/50 splits.

I have had them split off very small babies numerous times. Splits are not always 50/50. I have noticed that green bta's are the worst about doing this. Not sure why, but most times mine end up with 3-4 way splits and the "momma" is always the bigger chunk left.

This is exactly what mine do. But usually more of them lol. Also, the mouth is nice and tight on the one from yesterday. It also looks nice and tight on the one from today. This was just a normal split, with a small baby being split off.

This is exactly what mine do. But usually more of them lol. Also, the mouth is nice and tight on the one from yesterday. It also looks nice and tight on the one from today. This was just a normal split, with a small baby being split off.

Well water params could be a whole different subject lol. But if you want opinions on them, head over to the chemistry section, post them and ask. But for reference I have nems in high nutrient tanks that do well and in ulns that do well. Biggest thing for them is stability. They are tough and can adapt to a lot of things if given time and stability.

I waited 18 months to introduce the nem and this happened in a week

18 months, if the tank has been stable and everything else looks good, you should be fine. They can split due to stress, huge alk swings (how I get my Black Widows to split lol), or if they are just happy. So as long as stuff has been stable just roll with it.

If the nem was recently introduced (I forgot to ask that) then it could have just split due to stress. Or it had a tear from improper removal of where it was before. I have had new ones split after reapiring a small tear in the foot. Almost like, kicking that part way to make sure the main body (so to speak) lived.

Either way, they both look good in the pick. Puffed up, and the big one has a nice tight mouth. Watch the little one, as it may start to walk. For health, you can use the mouths as a good guide to how it is doing. Random deflating here and there for bubbles is normal, it is when it gets not so random and they stay that way for a good bit of time. So just keep on watching them and checking to make sure they are OK. If something goes to crap, let us know and post some pics.

It's cool when they start to multiply (up to a point)...
Started with 1 RBTA and now have 9 about a year later. Regular feedings and large environment changes (think large water changes, moving tanks or changing lights) can spark the splits.

keep in mind that clowns can beat up a small nem like that. they can be very aggressive when trying to settle into a host nem.
