He is awesome I just got one too! They are fun to watch. I made a PVC
Cafe for mine and it loves it. Does your move around alot and burrow or stay in one place?

No they are not aggressive unless they are housed too close to one another or if you get two males or if you have other jaw fish of different species. if you do they will sometimes fight over the same burrow I have a yellow head jaw fish in here as well and sometimes they fight but for the most part they are peaceful with one another. they are an excellent reef fish and show fish for a tank. I keep him in my 65 gallon but I believe they can be in tanks as small as 20 gallons, however you need about 3 inches of substrate for them to burrow in

Wow that is an excellent idea to make the cave out of PVC . Yes mine did tend to move around a lot in the beginning. He would fight my yellow head for his cave he ended up winning and the yellow head dug a new 1. when I first got him he dug 2 or 3 it was driving me nuts lol but I think he's content now. I have about 3 inches of crushed coral and sand substrate.

Have tried three or so over the years without success. The aggressive feeders seems to outcompete these bottom dwellers I may just try one more , they are beautiful fish and have a comical, sweet smile ( ya I know they don't smile but you get it, they are just cute)

reef, How long have you had yours for? did he go on a food strike when you first put him in?

Hey Rob I've had mine for probably a good four or five months now and I have to say he loves his food! That fish never misses a meal what have you tried feeding him? Mine seems to like chopped up silversides mysis shrimp and brine shrimp he is also eating flake food

Absolutely I agree with you sometimes when I put a silver side in my metal forceps to feed my acans he swims right up and snatch it .very competitive eater but luckily thus far I've been fairly lucky he eats food in the water column right along with everyone else and nobody seems to fight over anything. I have noticed there are a lot more sociable than other jaw fish and it seemed to spend more of their time outside of their borough, have you tried feeding him in front of his hole? Sometimes if you can get them to eat where they live they will wait and expect food during feeding. if there's one thing that I have learned from this hobby it's that fish sometimes act like children lol what I mean by this is you have to if you will train them or teach them sometimes if they don't want to eat something that you know is good for them you have to make them I think maybe if you train your fish to accept food from its hole you may have better luck

Sweet fish! Is it active?

Hey throttle yes they are a very active fish they are more active than other fish of this species I have noticed. Other jaw fish I have seen have seemed to keep quite close to their whole and typically just poke their head out every now and then or bob up and down in front of it. This guy however sometimes when I'm filming videos for my youtube channel he likes to get right in front of the camera lol very sociable and fun just be cautious if you have other fish of a similar species or some types of sand sifting gobies they may fight for space

I've had mine for about 3 weeks. He took to eating after about a day. I feed alot with a turkey baster. As soon as I put the baster in the water he swims out in the water column and attacks the baster for food :)
He spends most of the time in his condo. It is made from 1 inch PVC and 3 (1 inch) 45 degree bends. My sand bed varies about 2-3 inches so this was a great way for him to have a burrow. I roughened the pvc with sandpaper and used loctite to
attach sand and rock to the outside. He took to in pretty quickly. It was a fun project.

Usually he/she leaves other fish alone...other than feeding time! He darts out! I have seen it more recently though come out during non feeding times and sort of hang out in the water column though. Doesnt attach other fish. I have seen him
nip at my black cap basslet once or twice but I think it was territorial and they reside in different areas of the tank now...

he's got reign of the whole center of the tank :)

Awesome! Looks amazing! I've been thinking about making one out of PVC myself any tips? Do you kinda have to lure them towards it or do they just naturally find it on their own and take to it?
