My bulletproof, beginner, 105-gallon build. Will it be overstocked?

I’m gonna try and pair two Marine Bettas, or at least get them to co-exist. Each will have a cave on opposite ends of the tank (48”x24”x22”). They should look really nice and 2 fish that can survive the marine equivalent of a nuclear attack.



The Clownfish pair. It’s obvious. Not having a tank without them. They’re also the only fish I can get captive bred among the species I’ve chosen (in China).


The Basslet for the color.



Flame Hawkfish. Not sure how easy it is to pair them. Can it be done? I’d love it if someone can weigh in on it. My thinking is 1. They’re really cute 2. If I get two they’ll be less likely to jump (I’ll have an acrylic top anyway, but still).



Dwarf angel. Another type of fish I have to have.


Damsels. I’ll be mixing two different Chrysiptera species (left out the Yellowtail Blue as I heard they’re more feisty) or one of the more peaceful Chrysiptera species and a trio of Neopomacentrus azysron.


That’s a total of 14 fish.



First group: After tank cycles

overstocking is relative, need to make sure your tank is properly cycled. Also, a good idea is to quarantine/treat fish to avoid headaches later on.
Marine bettas may not like each other as you say but may not be overly aggressive to each other...it’s always a gamble. They may try to go after very small fish, although not that common

Damsels are nasty and may kill each other, I would add all together for best survival odds.

Flame hawkfiah can be paired, usually should look for a smaller and a larger one. As always there are no guarantees. Divers den also often sells bonded pairs.

As of today I’ve made some changes. I’m only going to add one species (a trio) of damselfish. It’ll be chosen from the following species: Azure, Talbot’s, Springer’s, Chrysiptera Rex (King Demoiselle?), or Greyback damsels (they’re a new species and a Chrysiptera, but I’m not sure if the ones in the pics are Greybacks).

Definitely gonna try pairing hawkfish, hope I can find a larger one and a smaller one.

I will be going for a trio of Pajama Cardinals as my second fish I’ll be keeping in a group, so that’s 3 damsels I plan to add together and 3 Pajama Cardinals. The Pajama Cardinals will be added before the damsels as they’re the more peaceful ones.

I also hope I can find 2 Marine Bettas that are healthy, with one big and one small. According to the advice given by @ThRoewer on Reef Central, he says the best bet is to find a smaller one preferably under 4” and a larger one that’s 25-50% larger. Taking that into consideration, my plan is to get one in the 6-7cm range and one that’s in the 9-10 cm range. That would be ideal. Have the LFS hold them for me, 1 week in the same tank with a divider and 1 week without a divider. If they’re not killing each other I’ll buy both at the same time. Another option I’m considering, if the above conditions cannot be met at once, is to first get one, and later on introduce a bigger or a smaller one in an acclimation box and see how the first one responds to it.

I’ll be adding two caves, one on each end of the tank, so that both Bettas can have their own space.

This is something I’m really looking forward to. It would be so cool to have two. If I’m able to get even one betta early on, it’ll be the first or among the first fish to go into my tank, just in case it needs time to adjust to captive foods. Plus it just makes me excited as it’s one of my must-have fish.

So now my stocking list will look more like this:
