There's nothing you can do other than moving either, the host dying however is quite rare and usually only happens when the clown is too big for the host or too enthusiastic

Agreed. If a clown has chosen a surrogate to host in and is particularly aggressive with its hosting, the only option you have is to move the fish to another tank and/or provide it with another nem to host in.

If you only have the one tank and can get a nem already attached to a rock, basket and secure it to the top of the tank. Then when the lights go down catch the clown and put it with the nem. As long as the nem is opened up the clown should naturally want to start hosting it. After a day or two you can move the nem and clown out of the basket and back into the tank. The clown should stay with the nem after that. If you don't have a basket, a colander will do. Or use a large bowl and scoop up some tank water, just be sure to cover it in case the clown tries to jump out and wait until it's hosting the nem. Keep in mind you may need to move the hammer as well.

So the clown is not hosting, the coral is the host. Pet peeve of mine. Second you can get a clear container and make holes in it. Cover the coral so the clown cannot get to it. After a week or two remove it and see if the clown goes back or not. You want it to be clear so light can penetrate. Holes will help with flow.

all great ideas, i'll talk my girlfriend into trying another anemone... hope he doesnt chew it to death like he did with the last one.
