The one thing I don't like about using raw shrimp is that it is frozen with a form of phosphate to keep it good, longer.
In this hobby, we try to keep phosphates to a near 0.00 level, and companies sell all these products to remove phosphates, but you are introducing phosphates right off the bat. To me, I don't like the idea. Doesn't mean it's bad, a lot of people go that route and it works out perfectly fine. Once it's cycled and you get a good solid CUC in there, it'll begin to go away.
I would actually recommend "dosing" some Brightwell Aquatics Microbacter 7 and Brightwell Aquatics Reef Biofuel. I was skeptical, but I had a crazy algae/phosphate issue, and a friend of mine (who grows all kinds of SPS like weeds in his tank), recommended those 2 products - which he still uses after years and years of having his tank running.
What do you know, 2 weeks later using the stuff and nearly all my algae was gone. I was sold on the stuff, and will continue to use it in low doses.
