It started with my first reef, a 15 gallon nano. I thought the idea of having a crab was so cool and i always saw emerald crabs at my LFS for $5. I did my research and saw the mixed reviews. Some saying that theirs is a model citizen and others that despise these little creatures. Despite my research I decided that i wanted one. I picked a decent sized one (half dollar size). The first day or two was great, he just hung out on the rock. Since this was my first tank i was obsessed always checking on it and looking at it even after the lights go out at night. Thats when i discovered that my emerald crab had a taste for Blastomussa. I was dissappointed to say the least. I tried to fish him out for an hour before i got tired of the cat and mouse game before i completely ripped the tank bare down to sand and caught him. I didnt have a sump so back to the LFS he went for a refund.

A year down the road I bought my 75 gallon system and decided “Hey, since i have a big system now I bet I could get another one and it will have so much room and food he’d never bother anything.” I picked up 2 very small emerald crabs from my LFS. About 2 months later they have not bothered a soul. Then in broad daylight i see the bigger of the two perched on top of my hammer coral chilling. I felt something funny was going on. I watched him for twentyl minutes sit on this coral waving his claws in and out of the tentacles of the hammer but never clamping down. I swear he was toying with me to see how much he could get away with. The hammer was annoyed but not being damaged so i decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I ate those words. That brings me tonight. I am stilled obsessed with my tank and check up on it frequently. It was 4 am, the tank was pitch black, and i whip out my flashlight to check everything out. Thats when i see him completely mowing down my Green Star polyps. Ive never seen a crab eat so fast. He was tearing it to pieces. I grabbed my tweezers to try to grab him before he took off into a hole so he could be banished to the sump. I got ahold of him but he had a death grip on the rock and i accidentily ripped his shell from his body. I felt bad but he was a bad seed.

In conclusion, I gave Emerald Crabs multiple chances because I really liked them and wanted them to be a part of my tanks community but i've learned that they will eventually go rogue. I cant speak for all emerald crabs because im sure that there is good ones out there but I got burned one too many times. Despite all the threads ive read that are titled “Emerald Crabs are NOT reef safe” i got one anyway because i didnt want to believe it. I will never include them in my future systems. It really is a gamble that ive always seem to lose.

There is still one left roaming my system. Against everything i just wrote i may give him a chance to show me he isnt rogue. I will update the thread anything happens.

p.s. The point of this was not to bash them but to inform people interested in buying one.

It can sure be a lot of fun watching emerald crabs they have loads of attitude. They are certainly a risk though. I’ve had very similar results as you with all but one. The last one I got to eat up some bubble algae. It did it’s job nicely and afterward just at othe algae off of the rocks. I don’t think I would get another one unless I needed some bubble algae disposed of.

Same here. I've had, kept, and sold hundreds of them and it'll be a tossup if they're okay or not. Lots of interesting things happen housing a couple dozen of them in a propagation flat. Some of them won't bother a soul and will be model citizens, while others will pick at corals, or some will tear each other apart. Just about all of them from the source I ordered from ate bubble algae and other types, so that's good at least.

I forgot to mention that when i bought the pair of emerald crabs for the 75 gallon system, they were both the same size. The crab that went rogue grew substantially while the other still remains the same size. I have read that males tend to be the bigger/more agressive ones. I just peeked in on the little one thats still in there and she seems to mind her own. I really hope it stays that way and she can remain in the display.

it has been exactly a week since the original post and today i caught the little emerald crab on the same green star polyps. watched him for a little and he was just scraping the surface but then he pinched the polyps and ripped one. this one was lucky to survive me catching him. he went to the sump. kinda sad but the fish/corals are the main priority. no more emerald crabs in the display. case closed

Here we go again...

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

needed some “order filler” to reach the free shipping threshold so i decided to add some emerald crabs. i keep giving them chances. too many chances. 10 minutes in the tank hes ripping polyps off of my millepora. enough said

BANISHED TO THE SUMP.

Ive had a bad experience with one of these but need to beef up the CuC and was about to roll those dice again today... came here to read about peoples recent experiences... so big nope on that. I'll stick with some electric blue hermits.

I've had good results so far. I added one to my 40 gallon to help with a bubble algae outbreak. He did the job and cleared it out in weeks. I've had him in there for about 4 months and has been a model citizen. I do catch him stealing food out of the mouths of some rock flowers and some corals, but no damage is done. I also hand feed him a pellet every day. I also have a 20 gallon with an emerald in it as well. He's been in there for about 2 months and I've had no issues so far (knock on wood). I guess it's just a roll of the dice.

I love reading everyone’s experience with these crabs. I have three and got them to deal with hair algae. They have done a wonderful job and so far I haven’t noticed them messing with any coral. They really are a great cuc. But I do keep a close eye on them. Hopefully they will continue to be model citizens lol.

Honestly, a great way to deal with bubble algae is a Foxface if your tank is big enough. Mine was an absolute monster on eating any type of algae, especially bubble. They are timid and good looking fish which is also a plus.

Feed that crab!! Find out what his favorite food is and make sure he gets a lot. Maybe he’ll leave your coral alone

Emerald crabs are little buttholes. I had 3 in my 60 gallon cube and all got moved into the sump. They would pick at any sps polyps they could get their claws on. Didnt seem to pick as much algae.

*crosses fingers* I have 4 in my 40b and so far so good, I supplement with algae pellets so they don’t feel the need go rogue hopefully but man peppermint shrimp ... never again

That post was from 2018

I have since tried emerald crabs multiple times and still the same results.

The reason I, and many others, add emerald crabs is not for the looks or novelty. They are in my tank to work. They are a utility to the tank for clean up. Most of the time in bigger tanks you never even see them. Since thats the case, the minute that crab starts being destructive he leaves. I don’t want to have to feed the crab, he should be cleaning up after the fish and picking rocks for algae.

I did have a Pom Pom Crab for looks and novelty. They are super cool, highly reccomend if you like crabs.

be aware that foxface can develop a liking for some lps and softies.
