Just found 2 aiptasia in my tank. Must have been eggs on the zoa when I bought them 4 weeks ago, and they’re just starting to show now. I ordered some aiptasia-x and it should be coming in the mail next week.
Should I try and combat them? Or should I just through out the rock? I blasted them with the turkey baster thinking it was algae, so I’m afraid they’ve already released some eggs.
What would you do?
- aiptasia-x
- through out the rock

I'd pull the rock out watching closely where they recede and cover them with superglue.

I wouldn’t throw out the rock seems like a waste. There are many different ways to control aptasia. If you really want to be sure you could just boil the rock and then reuse it.

They’re growing from the plug with the zoas. Should I wait till they get a bit bigger before killing them? I’d think it would be difficult to make sure the aiptasia-x goes in the mouth when they’re so small

You want to kill them whenever you see them, and wherever you see them. waiting is never good. Aiptasia, like all anemones, can "walk" all over your tank. So they might be here today but could disappear into one of your rock crevices tomorrow and become a permanent pest. Aptasia X it now, don't even be afraid to damage some of the zoas, trust me it is worth it. Because down the road you'll lose more than just zoas if you don't keep them at bay from the get go.

Thanks for all the tips. So since I have to wait for the aiptasia-x to come in the mail, should I just pull the rock out and super glue all around the base of the plug?

I don't have any experience with them, but I agree with Sharkbait - have you thought about adding aiptasia eating filefish, or some other critter that eats them?
I’ve thought about it. But what I’ve read it’s not a guarantee. I like Cells idea of covering them with super glue

Instead of waiting for them to grow I would just smother them with some super glue gel. I've done that over small aiptasias at the base of some of my zoas and haven't had an issue sense.
Nice. I think that’s what I’ll do. If it doesn’t work then I’ll consider a new aiptasia eating fish

I've never gone the super glue route, but seems pretty straightforward and successful for others. I tried the kalk paste before with limited success too, but kind of a pain.

Pull the rock and chip away at the rock at the base of the aiptasia to remove it (kind of like fragging zoas). Then rinse with saltwater

Congrats!

Oh and as far as your thread title goes, congratulations!

Haha thanks. Part of me feels like I’ve manifested these things into my tank. I knew the zoas came from a tank that had them...rookie mistake
Eh it happens, they're no big deal imo
