The coupler is not pushed in all the way so i can take it off for cleaning, so figure you gonna add a few inches above your main line.

Really good idea about not permanently attaching... forgot about cleaning...

Built the new overflow grate this week. Finished with the clear coat, and cut the current overflow down some. Had to do my best to protect the water from plastic shrapnel, but some made it down. I assume it's not preferred, but not the end of the world for my little friends, right? 20190411_145137.jpg 20190411_145146.jpg

Here's a few angles for the overflow. Thoughts on which angle should face out?

1 year update!!!

Hello everyone! Wow were you all right! I made a zillion mistakes and am now realizing how aggressive this may have been for a first tank!! loving the hobby and quickly learning how much more there is to uncover.

I replaced the silly 5gal bucket filter with a 30gal sump. Added an omega 150 skimmer. Kessil 360NE. Klir DI-4 rollermat. Couple of Vortech MP40s. Apex fusion with the appropriate probes. Carbon reactor. Refugium. a dosing pump to add calc and alk only. And finally built a water changing station.

As for the tanks health- i ran through all of the plagues everyone warned me about and belive i finally have a stable enviroment! Im amazed how much will grow at the lower portions of the tank, and how little can handle the light at the top! Depth really does filter out light!

Current parameters:
Calc 440
Alkalinity 10.4
Mag-not testing yet
Phosphates .04
Only dosing a 12ml alk/daily and 30ml calc.

What would everyone recommend i add next?? Coral or fish, although i really only have room for 1 or 2 more fish. Threw a diamond goby in a few weeks back, and he jumped on on day 3 :(. Working on a hood now :)
Remember! Nothing that will eat the clean up crew!! Tank is too deep and has never been gravel vaccumed

Cheers and happy reefing!!!!

Awesome build! Have you fully stocked it yet?

Would be one super cool seahorse tank with all that vertical room!

How's this tank doing? I also have a tall column tank, and am thinking about fish. What kinds of fish can take advantage of the vertical space?

I see a lot of recommendations for gallon size tanks for certain species, but that doesn't' help me, since I'm 400 gallons but tall.

@Passedyouby Love the creativity here!
