lost my first fish today, :( lastnight had a heater go and tank got to 35 degrees c

hope now i got temp down and a new heater in i wont get any more losses

but i have a couple corals (un known type) that have shrunk down and changed white. should i b worried?

Lost all my SPS about a year ago due to the tank getting to 84.6 degrees F, from a normal 78 degrees. Didn't think that small of a change would do so much damage. Everything else made it.

Sorry about your loss... FWIW, one of the things I did from a similar incident I had was to always use 2 heaters and put them on a controller be it an APEX or you can buy a less expensive stand alone. That way they are controlled separatly and if one fails it can be shut down independently and automatically. HTH...

Any good cheep options u know of. Only thing bout being in nz we are very limited in wat we can get here i use ebay a lot for me marine gears

A basic one might be the JBJ True Temp Digital Heater Controller. Think they run about $80 or you could get a basic programable version like the Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper Lite for about $120 and monitor/control up to 4 heaters. More realistically you could do the 2 and have 2 switched outlets left over for lights or other things. You just want to get away from those single point of failure switches that are inside the heaters themselves and have something more independent and versatile giving you more redundancy.

Sounds great john will look into that after work, think a controller b the way to go.... Failsafe it as much as possible

use 2 heaters anyways, if you need 200 watts to maintain tank temp get 2 100 watt heaters, if one goes bad and stays on it wont be enough to bake the tank. But for sure if possible use the controller and fans for cooling also.
