Hey Everyone!

I got a 10 gal tank for my birthday and decided to get a saltwater tank going. I understand that the smaller tanks are less forgiving than a bigger one but given the size of my apartment i have to make due hah. I've already met a few very helpful people here locally just by going to a specialty store and they referred me here. I plan on doing mostly coral with a couple clown fish, some sexy shrimp, and maybe a few more but i dont want to over crowd it.

I dont have any direct questions just yet but i figured I should let everyone know my setup in case I'm missing something. I just threw water in it today so I've got a ways to go before it finishes cycling.

I have:
- 150 GPH bio wheel
- digital thermometer
- LED light
- salinity refractometer
- 425 GPH powerhead

Im not tooooo sure if i need a heater since I'm in florida and the room doesnt get too cool outside of winter.

I also filled it using salt water I bought from the local store here. I figured ultimately because of the size of my tank it was probably more practical/economical than adding salt to the water myself.

What do you guys think? Im getting some rocks tomorrow to throw in and once its done cycling I plan to get a nice live rock to throw in before getting any livestock.

Welcome to R2R. Lots of knowledgable and helpful people here who will support and advise you when needed. Do you have test kits for the basics like alkalinity, calcium, phosphate and magnesium?

Welcome to R2R!!!

I started with a 10 gallon and love it.

like you already know, it’s really really hard to keep it stable... but if you run into any issue with water, a huge water change is one bucket and a 100% water change is 2 buckets.

one suggestion I have (Based on my own mistake) is to make sure your refractometer is calibrated with 35ppt calibration solution.
I was using RO water and my saltwater was way off. I did not find out for about 2 months when I finally brought my water to LFS to test it.

another suggestion is to get all live rock for a 10gallon. I started with dry and had algae issues for 6 months, I switched my rock out a piece at a time, but tank didn’t look good till I had all Live. If I was to do it over again, I would Just get all live to start.

I am making same mistake again on my 60. I wanted a cool scape so I used dry and Emarco cement to make one. I added a piece of live from my 10. The only rock that looks great after 4 months is the single piece of live (and it looked great the day it went in). I’m quarantining more live rock right now to add to this tank.

good luck with the tank! We all do things different ways and no one way is necessarily right for you. Best of luck to you!
