Hi all,
I've been stalling on my tank upgrade because I'm feeling way out of my depth (see what I did there). I am planning a very basic set-up and I thought others out there like me would be interested in something like this.

My 75-gal tank will be 2 years old this November. I bought 2 green spotted puffers that the LFS told me were freshwater, and long story short, ended up buying a used tank on CL and setting up a SW tank with the help of some nice folks on the Puffer Forum. I learned about live rock and mixing salt, and now I think I'm hooked.

My current set-up is pretty medieval. No sump, hob Remora skimmer, SB Reef lights. All second-hand except for the lights. I do a 16-gal water change once a month with buckets, and manually top off twice a day. No dosing as of yet.
I do not use RODI water. (Please don't hate me but we have great water here in Vancouver).

My fish in order of when they were added:
2 green spotted puffers, YWG+shrimp pair, ocellaris clown pair, longnose hawkfish, mandarin, tail spot blenny, flame hawkfish.

Coral...a bit of everything including RBTAs, zoas, and some lps & sps.

I've been having a real blast thus far and luckily have all my original livestock, except for a lawnmower blenny who wouldn't eat and a longnose hawkfish that jumped (RIP Lenny & Fergus).

I also lost one of my original puffers in Aug (she jumped) which was traumatizing as she was my favourite

. As fate would have it, I was able to adopt another one.

My current tank: (75 gal)

The tank I bought: 72 x 18 x 20

It came with a stand that my husband stripped & reinforced (he's reasonably handy and owns power tools haha).

My immediate hurdle - I am very nervous about tackling the plumbing. I enjoy the fishkeeping but the mechanics of figuring out baffles & flow makes my brain freeze.

Ok here's the back of the original plumbing.
Herbie system. Sump had no baffles.

Here is my very professional sketch of my system:

The sump is a 40 gal breeder. This is my plan for it:

Please critique away! The sump is where I especially need help.

Notes:
- I will probably add a few fish but no tangs or big fish. I like quirky characters.
- I'm planning on buying another SB Reef light so it will be 2 x 32" lights
- my skimmer will be a Bubble Magus 7
- an ATO will sit next to the sump

Thanks for any input!

I would keep the water level in the fuge section high at about 12" or 11". Are you going to use filter socks ? Are you going to use a platform under the skimmer ?

I'm thinking of getting a filter sock similar to this:

So you think the 2nd baffle should be 11-12" instead of 9"? I was thinking of making the 1st baffle 12" and adjusting skimmer height with stand if necessary. I read the Bubble Magus likes a height of about 8-9".

I was thinking of getting a glass shop to cut baffles for me but I also see you can order baffles online which is nice because they have weirs. I've read acrylic and glass is not the best idea, but there are advantages too (easier installation, etc).
I'm getting quotes on the glass and they are a fair bit higher than I expected.
Thoughts?

By making the second baffle just a bit shorter than the fist for the fuge, you give your algae more room to grow. This allows for a bit more export of nutrients.

Ok I've tweaked the numbers a bit. Hope this is an improvement!

So I picked up the glass for my baffles & I found the shop had cut me an extra pane of the long piece - the 12" one that goes all thr way to the top (leaving 1.5" gap at bottom).
Would it benefit me to use this piece, perhaps as the very first piece after the skimmer, also 1.5" from the bottom? Or should I leave well enough alone?

The only place would be in front of the baffle between the skimmer and fuge. But, I would follow your plans and just have a spare piece of glass to use later

That's along the lines of what I was thinking, but I was more inclined to keep it simple. Less clutter, things to clean etc.

Good to have you as a sounding board. Thanks Jim!
