My glass just randomly exploded with algae

So I just came back home from being away for about 7 hours and my whole glass is pretty covered in algae and my skimmer is full all of a sudden. I just did a water change yesterday and all my corals are doing great. What just happened?

could be something as simple as a dead snail, nutrients became available and boom!

In my experience my glass would frequently get covered by diatoms a day or so after a water change.
