Question for my fellow reefers:

Can toxic mist from Zoas (not palys), just float in the air when Zoas are disturbed by my cleaning or in general when something else ticks them off? What I mean is, even if I’m no longer right over the tank can those toxins occasionally release through the room?

My tank is literally 4ft from my bed so trying to ensure I have the right knowledge regarding this.

I do have bedroom windows open daily and most nights (even a crack in Winter), so the room doesn’t get like a Florida swamp and more importantly to get rid of carbon dioxide since I’m in there ALOT.

just want to know what the scientific conclusion is on coral toxins in the air - even if they’re just sitting in your tank.

I don't believe so. From my understanding it's airborne when you boil it. Everything else seems to be it you get it on your hands and it ends up in your eyes or mouth.

I could be wrong though.

Yes short of boiling, touching and not washing or licking it like a psychedelic toad I have never heard anyone getting ill from breathing in toxins from tank directly

Large toxins themselves cannot enter the gas phase, like from a drying puddle.

But water droplets that get launched into the air can contain palytoxin and any other toxin, and one might breathe those in, get them in your eyes, etc.

An air bubble rising to the surface and popping can release small droplets to the air.

Want to ensure I have at least awareness on these types of things, and if further knowledge is needed or taking an action to correct will be in my mind.

Special Update:

A Valentine’s Delivery! My Mel Wrasse and Diamond Goby are at the house! Acclimating at the moment and will likely dive into sand before I get DT pic of them; so here they are - photo doesn’t even come close to the colors!

Feeling like one of them should be called Valentine, and the Mel is the appropriate guy. Grumpy face goby doesn’t go with that name.

They’ve been conditioning in same tank at LFS for me, until I was rdy and they have gotten along quite well. So a good start.

I’m giddy with excitement!

Interesting conversation about zoas and palytoxin. Two weekends ago I did my usual tank maintenance and relocated several of my zoas. The next day I came down with an eye infection and was worried it was related. Worked myself all up about it and started doing research. I stumbled across an article from a medical journal of someone that had an unspecified exposure during tank maintenance with immediate symptoms. Luckily with irrigation after the exposure and antibiotic eye drops they had a complete recovery. I got my doctor to call me in some drops and mine cleared up in a couple of days. I’m sure mine had nothing to do with my tank, we have 3 and 5 year old girls so always have something going on ha, but thought it was good information to have.

A Little Bit Later Update:

Both fish acclimated to new home quickly. Goby got right to sifting sand for about an hour and then built himself a little mound and promptly went to bed.

Mel Wrasse (Valentine), scoped the entire DT, swimming through all the nooks, crannies, and swim-throughs; checking each coral and aspect of the tank. Visited the clowns but wasn’t very interested in them. As the main lights started to dim for the night, I could tell he was looking for a place to rest his head. The moment my main lights turned off (30 second delay before moonlight cycle), he literally dove into the sand like a disappearing magician and was done for the evening!

Now the two clowns who’ve had a 75 gal DT to themselves for 3 months were like W T F! Who are these interlopers! But once they were able to get next to each other all was well.

Gotta admit, teared-up a bit watching the tank really come to life - waited 3 years for this moment and it did not disappoint.

I consider it a successful introduction and look forward to what the morning brings.

New Fish Update:

Need to thank the following veteran reefers and obsessed wrasse lovers for guiding me on fish: @i cant think @Slocke @tbrown

It’s been 4 days since I added the two new fish - Mel Wrasse and Diamond Goby! I’ll focus on the Mel first since I was able to get some photos. Tomorrow, the Diamond Goby.

First, I have decided to call the Mel, Rainbow Fish. It’s from the children’s book I read to my kids, and now grandchildren. I originally saw a photo of one last year as I was getting ready to buy my dream tank; and other then a pair of clowns, he was on the top of my list!

When he was placed in the tank 4 days ago, he swam around a bit and went to sleep in the sand as soon as the lights turned off (didn’t wait for my lovely moonlight cycle that started 30 seconds later!!) lol. And I didn’t see him for 3 days!! I know it’s normal and I wasn’t concerned- I had a great cover on the tank from Toplid’s and knew he was safe.

He came out yesterday late afternoon, looking like a goofy teenage boy wondering if Mom had a plate of food ready…. Of course I did! I’m Greek! He gladly ate the PE Mysis, and causally swam around the tank. He found his buddy the Goby (they had conditioned together in the same tank at my LFS for the last 30 days while I got my GHA under control); and was happy to rest near him as he made the rounds. He checked out the clowns, wasn’t too interested and the female gave him one back off movement and that was it.

Today, he left his bedroom at 10am (again teenager), and spent the day exploring. He happily ate the mysis, TDO pellets, and pecked at rocks with the nice copepods waiting just for him. He visits the clown’s corner of the tank and everyone is chill. He loves the Goby and likes to check in, almost like a security blanket.

About 5 minutes before lights were to turn off, he started circling the same sand area he has been sleeping in. Like a child wanting his baba, blankie, and bed! Literally the lights go off and he dives into sand leaving a poof in the air. Very cool.

I took some photos- ignore photography, GHA, glue globs on frags and enjoy this youngster’s happiness to be home where he belongs!
