I've been in and out of the hobby for about 8 years. In that time I've had tanks between 5gal and 200gal. Hatched and raised cuttlefish, mantis shrimp, big mixed reefs, frag tanks, wild coral acclimation tanks, worked in fish stores and design a bunch of reef keeping accessories.
This is my 3rd 29g biocube and if it's anything like my last one, I will be very happy with it.
I picked this tank up used for dirt cheap. Scraped the paint off the back to use the middle chamber as a refugium. Filled the bottom of the third chamber with ceramic filtration media and piled some live rock rubble on top of the return pump.
Equipment :
Led retrofit (current USA) that came with the tank, most likely will get replaced. Only has white and blue leds, with a few burnt out.
ATO with a 5gal jug fed by RODI with a float valve.
Inkbird heater controller with wifi notifications.
Jebao slw-5 and slw-10 pumps
Coral box 4 channel dosing pump
I recently picked up an Apex classic brain box. I have temp and pH probes coming from neptune. Will get an EB8 when I find a stupid cheap opportunity.
I have about 120lbs of dry rock in the garage so I made a few of the wonderful shelf pieces to give me a lot of horizontal surface area with easy flow under and in between them.
Some very fine sand but not much. I prefer bare bottom but no reason to make things more difficult in a small tank.
Stock plans:
Two clowns, one oscellaris and one snowflake.
Six line wrasse
Forth fish is an herbivore, only if needed.
No specific plans for inverts other than clean up crew requirements and a cleaner shrimp of some kind.
Corals:
Initial plans are for a mix of zoas/paly, acan, chalice and and LPS with some movement.
I have had tremendous success with this almost identical setup in the past. The biocube I had in my office grew several Acropora so well that the doser became a necessity. Trimmed chaeto out of the refugium every few weeks and a 5gal water change once a month.
I am not thrilled with the light. I don't know if I want to replace it with another current USA fixture (it is a really convenient light to just attach inside the hood) or take the hood off and go with an AI Prime.
The fishless cycle started a couple weeks ago, completely dry and some dormant bacteria. Ammonia is being consumed slowly, nitrite has leveled off and nitrates are rising.
I've ordered some live bacteria to diversify what's growing in the tank.
I will add one of the clowns as soon as the system is ready but it will stay lights out for a few more weeks after that. Once the lights go on, I'll get some pods in the tank and give it a couple weeks for the ugly stages to go through their process.
