My Kole tang has ick

I just got my kole tang yesterday and it seems like it might have ick. As I introduce him in the tank my fox face was irritating my joke tang. Which is why I thing he might have ick. I’m new to this hobby so I’m not too sure if he has ick and if he does, what should I do?

If you can (which if it is ick could already be too late) catch it and put it in QT. Even if you are only going to put a fish in observation for a few days prior to putting it in your own tank is much better than not doing anything to see if the new addition has any diseases.

Certain diseases you will know about in observation then you can treat accordingly. I am by no means an expert on this topic. Before I add anything to my main DT, I at least have them in copper for up to a week then observe for another week. Doing this I have been very lucky to not have an ick outbreak or any other disease that I can tell/identify.

I did go through a velvet outbreak and lost a lot of fish. I went fallow until I thought everything was good to add back in fish wise to the tank (for me I did 3 weeks, but had both ozone and UV running the entire time). Fallow period is suggested 72 days.

BTW welcome to the hobby. Try to be patient (key work is "try"). Sure you have read, but nothing happens fast in saltwater keeping besides the bad stuff.

Thanks for the information. I went to my local fish store and he told me that he had ick. Because I have corals i bought the polylab reef safe medic. Hope it works

The best way to get rid of it is to QT all your fish for 76 days while the parasite dies off naturally. The reef safe remedies just don't work well for a majority of people

My fox face has now been contaminated by ick! I really don’t know what to do. I was thinking of doing an emergency qt tank to put my two fish with ick. If I do this should I take the water from the display tank for the qt since I unfortunately don’t have time to cycle my tank. I know that my dt is contaminated by ick so for this reason I don’t know what is best, keeping it in the display tank or use the display tank to make an emergency qt using my 10 gallon tank? And how should I treat once in the dt ?

Depending on the number of fish you have, yes that is fine for a QT tank. ALL your fish need to go through treatment now and you must leave your display tank fallow (fishless) for at LEAST 72 days. For treatment I personally like the tank transfer method for ich.

Would I be capable of putting one fox face a mole tang,3 damsels and 2 clown fish ? And what about the corals? Can I leave them in the tank ?

That tank looks like it would be very stressful for a kole tang and fox face. You can even use rubbermaid totes if you have one big enough. What is your plan to treat them?

Yes i agree with you. I decided to only move my fox face into the qt tank. I gaved him a fresh water for about 4 to mins and than place him in the qt. The reason is because my fox face seems the one with the most ick, but he his the most active fish in my tank.He eats a lot and is an active swimmer. On the other hand I don’t know if I did the right decision by placing him in a quarantine tank that was done yesterday and not cycled. Should I leave him there and treat him with copper or should I put him back in dt where I was treating my fish with polyp lab reef safe medic? The fox face does not seem to have the same issue as my Kole tang. When I first introduce my Kole tang he had a few white spots than after treating him with the polylab medic some the white spots when off. But unfortunately my fox face at first seem to have the same issue. He had yellow spots over his body. But after this it started to change into black spots on him. When I saw this i was upset since because I had not put the fish in qt tank before this cause him to contaminate my fox face. I really want to fix this problem for the fish safety and for my reef. Do you other suggestions on how to treat it and possible suggestions of medics I should use?

Get the fish into QT and start dosing Copper Power for 30 days. You want to shoot for 1.75ppm but don’t let it ever get under 1.50ppm,even for 1 hour. While your at it add Metroplex, Focus, Garlic guard to the food to treat for any internal parasites. Here is some info for dosing copper power at the correct ratio because the API test kits can be tough (you’ll need one though) or best case is a high range copper tester by Hanna Checker.
